carbon R1 can

ive heard that this can can reduce exhaust noise which has been the one of my main prohibiters apart from induction noise to me doing trackdays

1. how effective would this be on my 893cc megablade at reducing noise?

2. do they sap power?

3. why are they so different to my straight through westfield can?

4. what year R1 can am i looking for?

5. is it just the carbon one thats the most effective?

6. if theres an alternative what are you other guys using?

I have one of these not cheap I know but it really made a big difference to my ZX9r engined MK, I think from memory it reduced the noise by around 5-7 db and that was from an R1 carbon can, tested with the same noise meter from the same distance.

I had no scoop and the filter open to the air at the time so alot of induction noise also.

try mnr. they have some large lightweight silencers which provide excellent db levels for track use

98dB with std airbox and power is still good
plus you can get them unmodified for about £50
and they still sound nice, but barley notice the power drop over my straight thru Viper

yeh reman, thats what im on about, i guess its just the cans inlet pipe that needs modifying to match my existing header outlet pipe & the cans outlet pipe extending so it dont burn the rear wheel arch.
I read that your 98db was at 7k or 2/3 max revs with the bike airbox, mine at same revs was 103db but with a more open sock filter so i guess i have an induction noise issue to, something tells me that i gotta un-dynojet & get bike box like you
is it worth it i ask myself when so many tracks now specify nearly full revs at 3/4!!!!

you;ll probly find with a decent (kandn) filter in a box you dont need to change the jts, it wont hurt running a tad rich if it does

There used to be a guy on the bay selling these ready modified at both ends for about £100

i have 132 jets compared to your set up which if its the same as the standard bike will be 115,s so mine will be way to rich if i stick the bike box on

i to remember the guy on ebay selling already modified R1 cans for BEC's but it seems he is no more, by the way what year was yours, 98 per chance? & how easy was it to get it re-welded?

I've modified a number of these cans (some pictures of the parts I've made in myarchive)
problems with most of the later ones is they are titanium and you can't weld any of the stainless parts to them.
I really stopped doing them as the doner cans are getting rarer.

My understanding is that standard bike cans pass the gasses round several different chambers inside the end can therefore dampening the volume as the gasses travel further and further until the finally exit the end of the can. I had the same trouble as this last year with my gsxr powered car. In the end I went to see Paul gooderham (907) on here who made me up a beautiful can from scratch for an excellent price. Cheers Sam

thanks guys. i guessed it was different chambers, so bigboystoys what db are you getting at 3/4 revs & how much was the exhaust ?

as my current westfield straight through exhaust comes apart easily i wonder if i modified it by inserting some partitions with the perforated tube cut into say 3 pieces & staggered, just a thought

big_ l, as regards ducting to fit over pipercross i could only find the reverie ones which were at a silly price

I chose not to have mine measured although Paul did offer. Mine was just perfect for me on the road and motorways no longer make my ears bleed. I payed £250 fully fabricated and fitted with a one off mounting bracket. The detail and finish on the can is perfect. Lots of people on this forum have cans made by him

i assume this is the 600 series airbox your talking about? can anyone thats used one recommend them for getting the noise down?

it'll quieten it a bit but i wouldn't recomend it. mine fell in bits in less than 2 years and is now patched up with fibreglass. wont be using it on the r1 engine
rolling road also showed the filter to be very restrictive.
