I'm just starting a Haynes build. The MIG welder is on it's way. I'd like to start off by building the small bits and pieces... as the suspension brackets.
I saw there are some ready build sources, but I'd like to keep the costs low (the shipping costs).
My fist instinct is to buy the 3mm strips from my local hardware store, cut them to the length, fix them in the vise and hammer them against the vise jaws or a square cutoff to 90 deg angle, then drill the two holes.

I made mine from box section. Hammered in the vice will be poo and will induce weakness in a part you need to be strong.

You can make a jig to mark where the holes go in the box section, then cut away the edge with the seam and you're left with perfect brackets

Not made them myself, but I've read the same about using box section and cutting one side off. You can also buy U channel material, which saves cutting a side off. As above, bending/hammering in a vice might get you there, but they'll most likely be weak and look beaten about. If you have a pillar drill it'll drill cleaner straighter holes too.

I've bought them in the past and I have also made them.

Use box section and cut the face with the seam out.

the axle ones are easy to make from box steel, and the seem welded bit is the bit to cut off

these are on ebay, but check that there the right ones

The box cuts are the smart way of doin’ it... who needs the fancy laser cuts. I’m on a hunt for some bits of 50x50x3 and 40x40x3.
