Speedo and rev counter in the middle

Continuing with my build I've now found that I don't have enough space on the dash to mount my gauges, the gap between the top of the steering cowl and the top of the body is not tall enough.

The simplest solution is just to mount the gauges in the centre of the dash, one each side of the centre line. Obviously with them being there they need to satisfy the 'big ball of death' test, is there anything else to consider? I've got a few other items (tell tales, smaller gauges) that will be positioned behind the steering wheel. I've also got a hazard switch and fog light switch to home somewhere.

Also, for those using an MX5 engine, how do you route the speedo cable? I noticed the take off point is right at the bottom of the gearbox, I'm tempted to route it under the car and round to the speedo but I'm also worried it won't be long enough to reach.
