sierra lsd diff!

i had abit off a issue with my diff

when i got my diff i didn’t check to see the condition, so i put oil
in and didn’t think to check then magnet/filling hole bolt or take the back off
i cleaned up the diff and painted it.
i must off had a small leak that has been leaking when driving. as i have got
carpet in the garage i couldn’t see if it had been dripping in the garage.
anyways cut a long story short it started to squeak so i pulled the plug out
and refilled the diff back up checked the plug and small amount of metal
i drove to the mechanics and back and decided to
pull the plug out to check and there is so much fine bits of metal and metal sludge
i think the diff is now fu**ed.

i’m going to strip it down to have a closer look but don’t sound too goo

So what’s a good lsd to get fitted?

Stick with the standard Sierra lsd unless you fancy quite a jump in cost and fit a Quaife ATB diff.
I’d hazard a guess that the damage might not be too bad upon strip down though and you may well just need to fit a new pair of bearings and other oil seals. Hopefully the front pinion will be ok as the rest are a pretty simple swap over

How many miles did you do?

Unless you were sold a knackered diff a few miles low on oil won't have hurt it

i drove 7/8 miles tops.
i don’t know about the previous life off the diff but i know there was no oil
in there.. i’m going to have a closer look today and see what the situation is
but i have been looking at diffs

what the difference between

Quaife ATB and
Quaife ATB helical

I wasn't aware there was a choice?

Just be aware if you have bolt on shafts you need to buy the stupidly expensive output shafts off Quaife too, pretty sure they are knocking on £350

What ratio is your diff?

Bara Motorsport are in the midlands, they specialise in the sierra diff and can alter the Sierra LSD by changing the fluid in the viscous coupling and also re-build the diff

I had my diff done by Bara Motor Sports, they changed the viscous fluid for thicker stuff. Works great in the dry
but can be a bit of an handful in the wet. As i have to drive carefully in the wet anyway it does not matter.
(Now i can do donuts)

Do you mind me asking how much bara motorsport changed for this madteg. Looking to take my diff out to have backlash checked.

I had a quote last year,IIRC was about £220 for VC fluid change.
For Bara to do a full rebuild (bearings/seals/VC fluid change/set up) it was just over £500+ VAT
