daniel mason - 14/1/09 at 07:51 PM

Hi guys,
With between £8500 and £9000 to spend on a BEC.which way would you turn?
The only BEC i have ever driven is my stuart taylor zx9r,so not sure how others compare. eg; mnr vortx, mac#1, indyR, westy?
opinions would be of great help because you are the guys in the know.
Its mainly for road use with occasional track days

I haven't built one, but if i build again it will be MNR without a doubt.

MK Indy Spec R. With £8.5 - £9K, you'll get a pretty good spec'd Indy (assuming you're building it)

With what engine? most people seem to go down the R1 route but i fancy something different! possibly a zx14 powered car?

mad gaz - 14/1/09 at 08:10 PM

if u want to go zx14 , busa etc min 12k . 5k for kit 3k engine if its 9k max then gixer or r1 are best bett

daniel mason - 14/1/09 at 08:20 PM

why will build go up by £3000 if i go for zx14. a full engine kit with clocks can be bought for just over £2000?

coozer - 14/1/09 at 08:22 PM

MNR Vortx is a quality bit of kit and the service is superb as well, plus they are quite close to you....

daniel mason - 14/1/09 at 08:26 PM

thanks mate, yours looks superb!roughly how heavy would it be with an r1 engine?
I would imagine less than 500 kgs quite easily!

Have you considered the Spire GTR
Due to a change of plan we have a part built car that was destined for the RGB championship, although built to take a zx12 engine it could easily be changed for a zx14 unit. It was built to a very high spec with 4 pots all round, paddleshift, Team Dynamics pro race wheels and yokohama AO48 tyres, we are selling it as a part built kit at way under the cost of the parts so could be a viable way of building a very high spec car at quite a reasonable budget.
If you would like more details give me a call on 01449 736633

I was going to contact spire to see if they would consider selling their supercharged zx14 in white and red! so the answer is defo yes. please u2u me or call any time after 6 on 015395 62087

i got hold of my r1 engine for 900, but i think the busas and zx14rs start at about 1600, from what ive heard.
id say indy r, theyre a great drive! although the MNRs do look really nice! never been in one though...

daniel mason - 14/1/09 at 09:11 PM

thanks chris. was not going to offer £9000 for that car,i have another car too which i would also sell to raise funds.
But thanks very much for your help regarding the other points. Was also considering malcs sprint R or the SDR V storm prototype which is for sale. any ideas on these?

Hi

Hi if wanting to venture anywhere near a track day handling will be of some importance to you. Then that rules out quite a few of the ones already mentioned. With a budget of £8.5k - £9k you are well into the Westfield range of either BEC or modified CEC cars for sale. There's always some for sale on the WSCC for sale.

At least with the Westfield you are guaranteed a good handling car that will hold it's value with non of the obvious problems that come with many of the other marques mentioned. only trouble is that most of the Westfields will only have either a Busa or a blade fitted. But if you logically look at it even with a blade the better handling will see you further down the road than a more powerful worse handling setup.

Just my 2P worth.

Cheers Matt

If you're thinking of buying the car second hand already built, then I'd agree with Chris, go for an older Caterham or newer Westy.

Make sure you visit the factories of the cars you short list before you decide. I'm convinced one look at the MNR round tube chassis and you'll be sold on it.
