Exhaust/tyre problem
Timw - 12/6/08 at 07:28 PM

Not sure if anyone has similar issues.
I've had the car (MK Indy R1) since March time but now the weather is picking up its starting to get some proper use. After most runs out i find the nearside rear tyre is really sticky and has started to be "carved" out from what i'm guessing is the hot exaust gasses or flames. Its fairly noticable and getting deeper with each drive. Any one else had to shorten the exhaust or deflect it in any way?

The 90 degree bend on my exhaust fell off once (modified R1 can). The gases then melted the "carbon" stone guard on the arch. But with the arch in the way the tyre was fine. Your exhaust would have to be very low to directly affect the tyre.

Are you sure there's not something else rubbing on it?

Is this your car? The exhaust is low down by the tyre. Is it actually mounted on the rear arch? Maybe just shorten the link pipe and moved it up a bit. I used an offcut of steel bolted to the rails that run under the floor to give a solid place to mount the exhaust as it kept pulling through the floor.

yep, thats the car. The exhaust is mounted just before the arch. the gasses dont blow directly onto the tyre but when traveling at speed they will be.

Just check the arch isn't flexing and rubbing the tyre before you go any further. It's not ideal having the weight of the can dragging on it.

have already checked. the can is mounted on the side of the car, not actually touching the arch. i think it'll be a job for the weekend of shortening the pipe a bit

Something just made me go an measure up on my car. Turns out it's very similar to yours indeed, approx 11cm from the end of the outlet to the surface of the tyre.

I have a trackday on Monday which will be the first major outing for the car with this can on. I'll let you know if I have any problems but looking at some of my old photos the previous outlets were similarly placed so I don't expect any.

Both my exhausts end about 3" away from the tyres (one on each side) and are pointed directly at them. I've had no bother with the tyres getting hot.

Problem solved! Since the picture in the post was taken (about 2 months ago) the car seems to have dropped by about an inch or so at the left rear. Its visibly lower and the left spring seems to be compressed a lot more the the right. Not sure what may have cause this. Will be investigating tomorrow

Good news, I think! So the arch was rubbing then?

Timw - 19/6/08 at 06:52 PM

well, it news. At least i know whats causing it now. Just got to find some time to ort it now
