I am canvasing opinions from the "Experts" on here regarding the MEV Atomic with a full roll cage for use in Hillclimbs/Sprints using the R1 engine.

I am thinking of going down exactly the same lines.

My only concern is the roll cage built into the chassis and whether a suitable proper cage can be securely mounted.

Other thoughts are how much lighter would it be than, say, a striker without the trimmings and trappings of a road car

You need to look at the cars which you would be competing with and ask yourself if the MEV would be competitive.

The bike engined single seaters in hill climbs are very quick and look like formula racing cars eg OMS cars OMS racing Jedi etc.

I have no doubt that the MEV woiuld be a fun track day car, but I have my doubts as to wheter it could be competitive in a hill climb

would it not be in a road going class?
can you get a sylva r1ot with a cage?

As above if you enter road going class you'll be up against similar cars - not the single seaters. Pretty sure most regions have merged the BEC and CEC kit car classes so you'll always have someone to race against.

With a bike engine you don't go in a road going class, it's the race modified class (in my local club, anyway).

A R1ot might actually be the best compromise on cost/dynamics/speed and is certainly something that appears on my own shortlist.

I know of a SVA,d Mojo being run in Class 2A(Road going specialised production cars)
and a non SVA,d Riot with BEC being run in
Class 4A(Modified specialised production cars).
Some of the BEC are run in 2A, must be dependant if SVA,d or IVA,d.

Hi

The problem isn't the bike engine, it could be the vehicle configuration.

For next year the whole club speed event catagories will be as per the MSA Blue Book, which is going to a fun change but there you go.

So the engine 'problem' (caused by club championship regulations) will certainly go away, and Bike Engines in the Road going specialist production catagory should be fine.

BTW - You will need reverse.


The problem might be the vehicle configuration, as the Blue Book rules continually refer to the words 'Saloon' and 'Sports Car' and according to the MSA definitions that isn't either, so I could see 'interesting' discussions taking place on that topic.

I would nip along to an event, armed with a big pile of photo's of one, and have a chat with a scruitineer, just to see if they had anything to add.

Must admit it's a bit of an odd one..

From this observer's point of view, competitive hillclimb drivers generally.

1) Pick a well developed or proven car or spend time doing so.
2) Are ultra committed to the whole sport.
3) Are absolutely not scared of spending the cash. Most of the really quick guys up here have extremely highly developed cars.

Go and have a look at what is winning around your area (this is a bad time to be asking this question.) and ask yourself if you can live with them.

In my case, the answer is no way. I won't ever ever be competitive. I'll still have a go again though when I'm eventually ready.

I'm afraid that for me, the Atomic just looks so wrong in so many ways.
It doesn't look at all unpleasant, but it would not be my choice of car.
For me it would be a Riot with ZZR1400 engine, 13" wheels and some sort of LSD supplied by our very own mr Westgarage.
Tyres would be whatever the rules happen to allow at the time I am competing.

I guess I could be one of those ultra committed types, Sprinting mainly, but with some jadeness setting in. I'm also looking for something new, currently running a Westfield (it's been in roadgoing, now mod prod.). A change of wheels/tyres and it's back on the road for engine testing, etc., this I enjoy and still want to have that ability.
Ian and Mike Parr's R1oT (ASWMC) is legendary, very quick and handles beautifully. It's been the car to beat in Class B2 (Road Going Limited Production), no-one can, Ian in particular is an extremely able driver.
Difficult to see any car/configuration that's going to be better than a R1oT.

Loss of my job isn't helping (anything really), but if I had one (a job I mean), then one of Jeremy Philip's creations would be where my money would be.

Power... hmmm... a thesis in itself, the R1 is certainly a good choice. I know Ian and Mike would like *more* (must have more, must have more....) so I guess I'd go for a Hayabusa/ZX14 and fit into B3 (Road) or C7 (Slicks).
