Q-plate/amateur built vehicle
dutchsuperseven - 26/5/03 at 11:16 AM

How many parts/which parts do i have to use from the same vehicle to avoid a q-plate. I'm using sierra stub-axles, gearbox, rear axle-components and fiesta/escort steering parts.
The engine is a 1.8 Zetec (Escort incl. cat.). I've got all the documents/vin-plate and chassisnumber form the Sierra.

Greetingz Rob.

officialy each major component has a points value and you need as many points as poss from the same vehicle to avoid a q,but it depends on where you get it registered as some licencing areas havnt heard of this.conclusion.your guess is as good as mine, ive got a q but as i cant see the plates when driving i dont see it as a problem

The problem is that i'll have to register the car over here in the Netherlands and it seems that they dont accept Q-plates.
So, I need a non-Q registration in the U.K. before i can register the car here.

I have never done it so can't give any advice other than take a look here and contact someone at the DVLA.

I am not sure wether a Locost falls into B. Radically altered or D. Kit cars. I doubt it falls into B as it says "...but which are not kit conversions" and "If less than 8 points are scored or a second hand or modified chassis or altered monocoque bodyshell is used....'Q' will be allocated".

I would have thought it was more like D (unless you are making an all new kit with only 1 reconditioned (as new) part in which case it is C). Under D if you use the original chassis or body you can keep the donor reg but if you use a new chassis with 2 other major components from the donor then you will get an age related plate.

I suppose it ultimately depends on what the inspector feels is a major part but I would suspect they would be any of the ones on the list for section B. Bassically try to make it look as though you havve only used major parts form 1 donor and make sure you have a log book and anything else they may need from the donor.

This is only my understanding and as I said I have never registered a car and am new to this so I would suggest you contact someone at the DVLA centre you will be visiting.

We could do with a survey on the number of parts people have used (and what) to get an age related plate.

Hope this helps and good luck

Andy
