Hi all,

My Tiger drives very nice but it can slip in to reverse easily, as it is almost directly next to first. I thought that the type 9s were a push down reverse but this can slip in, albeit a bit noisily in to reverse without pushing it down.

Anybody had the same problem?

Any ideas on a solution to remedy this?

Has the car been fitted with a gear lever remote, there should be a reverse stop at the base of the gear lever when it's in it's original position and should be transfered to the remote if used. It could have fallen out if you have a standard gear lever position

Yes, I had that problem as well as going from 2nd to 5th instead of third..

The stick was wobbly as well so, went for this and it was sorted!

Rusty Nuts: Not sure - I purchased the car complete and IVA had already been passed - I havent looked in to the gearbox yet so dont know if anything is missing.

Coozer - So you think the problem may be with the gear lever? It seems to have a short shift kit / short gear lever so I assume this is new and not the old cut down sierra lever.

Anybody else have the same problem, swap the lever and that fixed it?

You have to push it down to get reverse. If it goes into reverse without pushing down it is probably the spring broken or weak. Try changing the spring.

It will almost certainly have an extension on the gearchange mechanism to move the lever back (unless you lever is underneath the dashboard!). It's quite possible this hasn't been made properly and there's no interlock for reverse.

If you have the extension to move the stick back the bracket lifts the stick up and that alters the movement and sometimes makes it miss the reverse stop

Thanks for all your help.

I couldnt get under the car today in order to get to the bolts, but I could see it is not a short shift but looks like it is just a cut down Sierra lever.

Do you think it is likely that it could be either a worn / broken saddle, or a broken reverse gear selector return spring also suggested here? Or is there anything else that is more likely?

As the above items are not that expensive I will probably change these items first, before looking at a new gear lever.

Does that seem like the logical progression?

No need to get under the car to check,just remove the gearbox tunnel top cover. You will probably find an extension bolted to the top of the gearbox with 3 bolts that has the gearlever attached , if you remove the gearlever and look inside the extension at the right hand side at the rear of the hole through the extension there should be a lump of metal that restricts the gear lever from going into reverse unless it is pushed down.Check it is in place before doing anything else

Hi Rusty,

Saw the 3 bolts holding the lever in place but due to a very small hole in the top, cant get underneath from above in order to undo the nuts.

I will certainly check this first once I can get in to it - if this bit is not there what is this bit I should order called?

If the car has a remote that hasn't got the reverse stop if your lucky it may still be in it's original position . I made my own remote and welded a bracket to take the reverse stop to the bracket, it helped having a spare box at the time , being able to adjust the position easily before welding. Have a look at David Jenkins site for more info on a remote and quick shift. No need to spend a fortune on fancy gear levers , the total cost of my remote and quickshift was £0.92

The gearlever has a rubber 'spring' , it looks a bit like a small, hard cv boot, it is just under the gaiter, if this has been cut down incorrectly to make a quick shift, it may not be supporting the gearlever high enough to engage with the 'detent', and so not needing to be pushed down to engage reverse.
If the saddle is damaged or even missing, it wouldn't effect reverse, it would just make the gearchange feel sloppy.

Thanks. I saw the bit that you are talking about but as it looks like a cv joint rubber gaiter I assumed it was just to keep muck out. How will I test if this the culprit? Just lift it up a bit and see if it drops?

If it is this, is this part replaceable or do I just buy a new gear lever?

On my car I have a Westfield extender and Quaife type-9 gear lever, and I had to put a washer between the extender and gear lever to make sure it hit the stop without being pushed down. Worth checking as it is an easy fix

The part we are talking about is part of the gear stick its rubber and acts as a spring to push the stick up as you put it in reverse you push down on it
If the gear stick has been cut down and the thread part welded back on like i did the weld / heat may have damaged the rubber spring
