Greetings,

I have spent all day installing my 'Vikki Green' wiring loom into my car (basic carbs on a 1.6 pinto)

Before connecting the battery to test everything, I thought I would check that there was no continuity between the two battery leads.

But there was!

Should there be? as I expected there not to be & every looks to be wired correctly.

could be in alternatoe or indicator circuit,usa a line fuse in circuit incase of a short,that will blow first

Little tip for everyone.
Use a car battery charger instead of a battery to test at first.
But do not try to use the starter !

With ignition off & all fuses removed there should be no continuity, Good idea to use the battery charger or connect the neg & use a 10 amp fuse to connect the pos, Also if you remove or disconnect all the unfused ignition controlled items, coil etc there should be no continuity, once you have that bit good,try connecting thing back up, first the non ignition controlled & then the ignition controlled, then start trying fuses in & turning thing on, you now need to make sure the test fuse can handle whatever you switch on, last off all is to try the starter with the battery connected fully

I use a tiny lead acid battery designed for backups in alarms. It will only supply a maximum current of 5 Amps or so - even with a dead short. However it will power up most low power circuits for testing purposes (lights, indicators, digital dash etc). When I have tested everything out with this battery I am then confident that the 'real' battery won't give me any surprises.

Planetester's 'fuse by fuse' plan is good sense. If you blow a fuse at least you know which circuit to start looking in.
