Further a previous post, I'm re asking this in its own topic as the previous title wasn't relevant.
How do I tell if my car was originally fitted with ABS? I have a haynes manual, and i can locate the master cylinder (just) the diagram in haynes for
the ABS hydraulic control unit does not seem to match that in my bonnet, but i can't be 100% sure. Is there an easy way to tell?
I've looked at the rear hubs as these are orginal and not replaced with kit from an st170 as the front were. and cannot note the rear wheel
sensors described in haynes, however these are drum rears, would ABS be fitted to these?
Thanks guys,
Ed.
p.s if u read the original post, removing and refitting the instrument panel appears to have resolved the airbag/seat belt and transmission warning
lights.
p.p.s baby is 3 days overdue now!

Do you have a ABS fuse? is there a ABS unit inline with the brake lines, (usually you will have 2 outlets from the mastercylinder to the abs unit, where it will split to 4, OR if no ABS it will have 4 outlets on the mastercylinder which go to each corner of the car.
stamp on the brakes real hard and look at the skid marks!
does the ABS light come on on the dashboard for a second when you turn the key on ?
all cars with ABS are required to have the warning light (although I suspect that all focus dashboards have the light, its just not wired up on the
cars without ABS)
also have you got drums on the back ?
I think all the ABS cars had rear discs
I might be wrong about the drums, but my 1.8 zetec mk1 has rear drums and definatly no ABS - I can take pics for you if needed....

My Mk1 facelift (2002 model) has drumbrakes on the back axle and it definitely has ABS.

Yes proper ABS always has sensors on all 4 wheels although for a while Ford and FIAT fitted a crappy mechanical system driven off the diff
output shafts but that was abandoned long before the Focus was introduced.
This what a proper Bosch ABS unit looks like, this one is on an old Rover 45 of the same era.

many thanks BT will crawl under again tonight, but It sounds like I'm in the clear and should just remove the sensor wiring from the front to pass MOT.
