Lowest profile tyre
smart51 - 7/11/08 at 10:07 AM

Total kit car dot com have a small feature this week about a new tyre from Kumho, a 385/15/22. Can anyone beat a 15 profile tyre?

Mr Whippy - 7/11/08 at 10:16 AM

Totally useless on a real life road though. One pot hole and that's the wheel wrecked. I've gone back to normal tyres on my cars. Can't stand lowprofiles now, noisy and very very uncomfortable.

Sounds a bit mad to me. This site has some interesting comments to make.

Anyone got coloured smoke and aroma tryes on their cars?

They banned coloured tyres in LA (and the rest of the US?) as the gangs were using them to mark territory by doing burnouts.

I'm with Whippy, I think they're rather sad, a triumph of technology just for the bling brigade. Bet they cost a fortune.

I'm with Whippy too. Not about the tyre thing, I don't know about that, just... generally with whippy

there is always one who has to take things too far and lower the tone of the conversation......... Wash your mouth out!

I think there's always been a bit of a hint in Benzine's avatar!! Ok so he has flowers for the BEC but a big greasy half naked man for CEC. Given the choice I'd take the flowers.

Benzine - 7/11/08 at 01:09 PM

That's not grease, that's manly sweat!

depends whether there's a body count involved or just lots of black leather

oh gets worse than than low profile, the kids with volkswagens now think its cool to put a narrow low profile tyre on a wide rim

DarrenW - 7/11/08 at 02:51 PM

Is it just me or does anyone else share the daft idea that tyres are the only contact you have with the road and shouldnt be messed around with. I would have thought the manufacturers of higher performance cars spend thousands road testing to determine optimum brand and tyre type for their set up.

That Dub defies belief.

really that is so stupid looking it boggles the mind

I doubt thats even legal as the tyres not even on the rim, probably invalidates the insurance too

I have had no problems running stretched tyres. Been running them for about 5 years now and passed every mot and inspection, no problem with handling or tyre wear or performance. I just like the way it looks everyone has a difference in taste though.

You just want to hope it doesnt give an engineer excuse to raise critical questions if you ever (god forbid) have a bump and need to claim.Unless of course you have declared all mods to the insurance, something i found relatively painless to do when i had a modded golf a few years back. I just had to send in a sheet listing the mods, specialist insurance wasnt too concerned as long as everything was listed and engine was only up to a certain limit (150bhp max in my case).

I think its more down to an opinion when its looked into. There are a lot of cars running stretched tyres in the UK and there is a lot of debate over the safety and legality of them but other than tyre manufactuers guidelines with tyre/rim width suitabilty (which goes against the stretch look) there doesn't seem to be anything specific relating to it. I have to say, that mk2 in the picture is pretty excessive with the stretch and personally wouldn't go that far with it or do anything I felt unsafe doing it and other than a defective tyre I once I had I have had no problems with it.

The insurance forms ask for rim width and tyre sizes but its never been brought up as a problem.
