205 GTi Advice needed

Hi,

My little brother phoned this evening saying he has destroyed the gearbox on his 1900 GTi Peugeot,Now he was asking me if he would get away with fitting the 1600 GTi box(something to do with better ratio's he was saying)
I personally have no idea,I assume it should be possible but will the 1900 driveshafts still fit the 1600 box ??

I'm pretty certain it's a straight swap. And a common one at that!

I think the difference in diameter was at the wheel end of the shafts, they are the same at the gearbox end I think

yep straight swap, very common.

Gives better acceleration but lower top speed.

Slower top speed,Any idea how much the box change alters topend by ? My Locost tops out around 105/110 MPH and his Peugeot just floats on by when were on track.

IIRC the shorter gearing of the 1600 is preferred by the guys running these cars at hillclimb/sprints and is probably a relatively cheap way of getting better performance

I just sold my 1.9 with a 1.6 box in it and it was far quicker than a standard 1.9 runningn the stock 1.9 box.

Although not lighting the front wheels up in first when trying to get a way quickly was an art i had yet to master!

the 205 diesel gearbox is also a swop with good ratios.

the only difference between the 1.6 and 1.9 is that the 1.9 has a hole for a crank position sensor which is need for the mi16 conversion.

Nigh on any be3 box, assuming it's not be1, will fit no probs. A note on ratios, my preference is std 1.9, especially 1st. I've had a couple on the car, including a 306 xsi box, and i found 1st useless, and hainvg to change to 3rd before 60 is also a pain, and can make the car slower on the road. If the engine is a good example, then spinning the wheels in first may also be a nightmare. At the end of the day, it's more important to have the worng box than no box.
