Zetec sump depth
Mix - 15/7/03 at 02:58 PM

I'm currently juggling my 2.0l zetec under an MK nosecone. Having raised the nosecone by 1" I find that the escort sump I have fitted is still 2.25" below the chassis bottom rails. I have read post advocating shortening sumps, how much can be removed from the sump and does anyone have any drawings/photos

Zetec there appear to be different sumps on the zetec, but reckon you 've got a Mondeo sump. the escort sump is shallower. Try siert's homepage think he had the two next to eachother

I am in the middle of this at the moment.

I have a 2.0L mondeo engine mated to a sierra type 9 gearbox. I have fitted an Escort 1.8 Zetec sump. The sump hungs about 1" below the bottom of the gearbox bell housing. With this set up I am seeing about 85mm of ground clearance !!!!

Basically it is (in my mind)pointless shortening the sump any more than the bottom of the bell housing, this would give me around 25mm more clearance. But beware the cast aluminium sumps can end up porous (and hence leak) if subjected to too much heat. So a aluminum welding specialist should be used.

I've got a modified (Dunnel) Mondeo sump. The top of my engine is about 1" below the nosecone on my MK Indy. There is a picture on my photo archive that will give you an idea of what it looks like.

I bought a shortened baffled zetec sump (by dunnell). I got it secondhand, really cheap from Scholar Engines, tel 01449 767711 about 6 months ago (they had several available at the time). Awesome quality of welding and baffling
