Fuel consumption
flak monkey - 16/7/07 at 07:59 PM

Used a total of 13 litres of fuel getting home from SVA and during the test, which works out at about 18mpg . Thats cruising home at a steady 55mph, looks like I need to get the carbs set up!

mark.s - 16/7/07 at 08:25 PM

flak...there sports cars man not oil burners
i think 18 to the gallon's pretty good or am i talking out of line

zxrlocost - 16/7/07 at 08:26 PM

think its time you put a bike engine in and joined the elite!

seriously I would expect a pinto to return a lot more than that

NeilP - 16/7/07 at 08:28 PM

S'right with me!

Mind you the words cruising and steady do not really well describe my style of driving on Saturday as I was scaring a mate who's never been in anything faster than an old diesel astra

ch1ll1 - 16/7/07 at 08:33 PM

thought that was the whole point of these

For what its worth, I get nearer to 30mpg when cruising, dropping into the teens when "pressing on".

DarrenW - 16/7/07 at 08:49 PM

BEC!!!! Giv ower!

18 is a bit low but you wont get much better. I manage about 25 on a steady motorway run. God knows what it is around the doors - approx 20 ish i reckon. Ive heard single figures is the norm on track days but ive never logged it.
As a rule when the tank is empty i just put some in. Seems to work for me!!

DIY Si - 16/7/07 at 08:51 PM

When mine works, and I'm out for a hoon (i don't drive it that slowly ever) I get low teens at best. Still better than my mini. I once got it down to an AVERAGE of 8 MPG for a whole tank!

Simon - 16/7/07 at 09:29 PM

From what I remember (it's a long time since I drove mine) I'd get about 25 on a run - running with the traffic! I reckon with the Jag diff and fuel injection, I should see better than 40mpg on a run

Scared what it'll be when turbos are blowing

I do remember a local chap built himself a hotrod with a 302cu in Ford in who'd just got back from an MOT and he'd used 3 gallons of fuel. For a 5 mile journey

paulf - 16/7/07 at 09:33 PM

My car seems to do between 15 and 30mpg depending on how im driving it, I normally average about 25mpg.
Paul.

RazMan - 16/7/07 at 09:37 PM

You guys really need to get a nice, economical boat anchor ... er V6!!

I get 25mph hooning round and 30mpg cruising with the (fairly fast) traffic.

Flippin' whipper snappers

graememk - 16/7/07 at 10:05 PM

i get 18 to 25 mpg

Chippy - 16/7/07 at 10:22 PM

Like Raz, my 2.9i turns in about 24mpg at fairly illegal motorway speeds, and about 30 IF i can keep my right foot in control, which doesn't happen very often. Ray

Lot to be said for having a few cubes under the hood!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All hail the Essex!

Walks the torque

JAG - 17/7/07 at 08:07 AM

So I do pretty well to get 35mpg AVERAGE then?

Never spot checked it after a hoon but overall average (tank after tank) is between 34-37mpg.

scutter - 17/7/07 at 08:17 AM

I managed 8mpg during the 1/4 mile day

stretch - 17/7/07 at 08:19 AM

im not sure on the conversion,

when driving around town, i get about 6km/l (16mpg)

but on sunday i did a 220km long drive doing about 100km/h - 140km/h and was amazed that i got 12km/l (34mpg)

as soon as you keep you foot steady its lights on fuel, put as soon as you start playing it gets really thirsty!

bimbleuk - 17/7/07 at 08:58 AM

I was averaging 33mpg when NA but now more like 26 with the Rotrex SC. I never got round to wiring in a lambda sensor before now. In a similar Striker with a similar NA engine with hours of mapping, the guys at OMEX have been getting 45+ MPG !! So I'll see what I get this weekend with some mixed driving.

Hellfire - 17/7/07 at 11:30 AM

Pinto performance at 18mpg

I'm with Chris. Drop a bike engine in and improve both MPG and performance.

Phil

omega 24 v6 - 17/7/07 at 11:40 AM

welcome to the world that's fuel hungry twin webbers.
Get efi and megasquirt for better economy/power.

smart51 - 17/7/07 at 11:53 AM

I average 30 MPG driving hard in my BEC. When I was running it in, I got 36 MPG. Even in the winter is only drops to 27/28.

scutter - 17/7/07 at 01:23 PM

Omega, I might ditch the twin40s and just use a bucket on the bonnet it'll work out better MPG.

ATB Dan.

flak monkey - 17/7/07 at 01:36 PM

Oh, and that was with 40's not got around to fitting the 45's yet...

I know its running well rich at the moment, so i am expecting to see an improvement after a rolling road session. 18mpg seems low for a 50 mile cruise. I wasnt thrashing it at all as it was the first drive out. Will see how it goes on thurs, as i have a total of about 180miles to do between home, VOSA and DVLA...

didnt you trailor it to sva in the end then ?

Mark Allanson - 17/7/07 at 08:05 PM

I consistently get less than 20mpg, unless I take swimbo out, she hates going over 50mph in the car, and an afternoon out driving up the north coast or similar car return over 65mpg (rarely going over 2000rpm!), but thats injection for you

Trailered it there, and drove it home

DarrenW - 17/7/07 at 08:39 PM

Ive just done a 190 mile round trip to Boggs today. Mixture of steady roads and some faster bits. Managed approx 28mpg. That is a record for me. Traffic didnt allow spiritted runs but previously i would struggle to get 25. The aeroscreen is making a marked difference.

Im hoping the bike carbs release some useable power and better mpg.

jacko - 17/7/07 at 09:17 PM

zx9r bike carbs on a 2.1 pinto 5lts to 30 miles fast and slow driving
