Wishbone brackets
Dean m - 3/11/16 at 01:35 PM

Hi,
I bought a full set of 2nd hand unused wishbone brackets from eBay for my haynes roadster chassis ( this could have been a mistake! )
I have been lining them up on my chassis using a jig, but I have stumbled on a problem with all 16 of the brackets.
The holes for mounting the wishbones should be 30mm from the Base to the centre of the hole according to the book.
However the ones I have bought the holes are about 34mm from the Base.
Effectively this will move the wishbones 4mm further away from the chassis.
Is this an issue? Or will I get away with that amount of error?
Cheers Dean

I can't comment on how it may affect the strength of the bracket, but if the dimension is consistent across all the brackets then is it any different to the chassis being wider? I doubt many chassis are mm perfect in their construction so I'd pay more attention to accuracy of placement of the brackets.

Hmm, 4mm longer driveshafts needed at the rear?
I suspect that this would not matter

Thanks for the replies.
All the brackets are exactly the same.
Good point about the drive shafts I will have to dry assemble the diff and drive shafts to the chassis and see how it looks.
I may risk just tacking the brackets on and see how everything lines up.

Hi.
The most likely places you'll have trouble is where the two brackets for a wishbone are on vertical and horizontal tubes IE you could end up with one being 4mm higher or lower and the other 4mm in or out. Thinking more so around the front end.

RE: diff and drive shafts

I'm guessing they're Sierra parts?

If so then from memory the driveshafts are spring loaded at each end. I'd think this would cover the 4mm difference, but a dry assembly might be a good idea to check first.

Thanks Matt, that is a really good point. The lower wishbone would sit at a really funny angle.
I think the best thing is to get some more. I don't want to get into the attitude of "that will do"

I'm building an MX5 haynes roadster using a Talon flat pack kit.
