Considering a GT1, anything I should know?
Antnicuk - 5/5/17 at 11:35 AM

Hi all
I'm looking at getting back into kit cars but fancy something a bit different and was considering a GT1 with a bike engine. Anything I should look at or check? It will be used for track days. They obviously look like they should go stop and turn well, is this the case?

Any help much appreciated as I'm a bit rusty on kit cars
Thanks
Tony

Just realised, my avatar is well out of date, need to buy a car so I can change it...

They don't seem as competative when racing in RGB etc.
The spires seem to do well in the mid engine class with the Mnr,phoenix, and ab arion doing well in the front engine class.
Nice looking cars though

Is this the MK GT1 which has slowly morphed into the Spire GT-R over a few years and has been further developed by them i.e. Le Mans LMP2 style open cockpit car? if so seems a good kit and has done well racing.

GT1

Spire GT-R

That's the one. Are there any fundamental floors with them?

The original gt1 (as far as I'm aware) was sold on and re developed by spire in GTR and GT3 forms, with great success in RGB and bikesports.
But there are some original gt1's still racing and they seem to be somewhat un-competative compared to the spires etc. Although I have no idea how quick the drivers are in the mk's. The spire drivers are very very quick indeed

Guess it depends what you're looking for from the car - do you want the car to be road legal etc?
Also, budget will be a major consideration - I'm picking up my Arion S2R kit next week and I'm sure Andy won't mind me saying but it's not in the same price category as a Typical se7en / Fury /Phoenix etc (more Caterham money) - but on track in the right hands it will be seriously quick straight out of the box.

Mid-engine then Spire or Aries /AB Performane Sabre (with the new bodywork) would be even quicker on track but maybe not to everyone's taste as a road car

I'm not going to compete, just do trackdays, so I want it to be fun and relatively quick compared to the variety of cars that turn up at your average trackdays. I want it to be road legal so that obviously has its compromises.

I just wanted to make sure that there is no history with the design so it can't be made to handle well. It's difficult to tell on a test drive on the road

Major coincidence...! I've been thinking about selling mine for a few weeks as my situation is changing, was going to write a spec list this evening.

I can forward it to you once done if you're interested.

There is also the MNR LMP in this style of car (mid engine, radicalesque)

Thanks James, yes please. What engine is it?

CBR1000RR is typically used - cracking engine

It's a ZX-12 A1 with a Power Commander 5 and Autotune. Engine had 9.5k on it when stripped out of the bike, I've done no more than 100 miles in the car. Road registered on a 2016 plate.

A GT1 with bike engine should be a very, very quick track car but Ive heard handling can be "interesting". I understand the chassis/suspension geometry was improved for the GTR resulting in a significant improvement in handling.
I wouldn't take much notice of the performance record of RGB cars, most competitive RGB cars are highly developed and bear little resemblance to their road going cousins.
I don't think anyone has put a gt3 on the road, Spire sell them as race cars.
Ive not been in a GT1 but given a GT1 will cost about the same as a GTR I'd try and find a later car.
