What does an R6 engine weigh? I'm building a scooter engined 3 wheeler and expect the final weight to be about 220 kg. I've started thinking that a 600cc engine and an extra wheel can't weigh that much and maybe a single seater could be made to a limit of 300kg. In which case, it would probably be as fast as my carbed R1 MNR was. It's all just idle speculation of course but would a 600cc bike engine be a worthwhile amount lighter than the 60kg that my old R1 engine weight (without carbs)?
According to wikipedia the dry weight of the whole R1 is 11kg more than the dry weight of the whole R6.
Given that R6 is going to use loads of R1 parts and any differences are only going to be smaller on the R6 (hence lighter) this suggests to me that
the engine can be at best 11kg lighter.

That makes sense but it means 300kg would be achieveable if you were prepared to fit ultra light weight wheels and motorcycle brakes etc. Could be an interesting project.
look at formula student cars, these all use R6 engines, im sure one of the unis have published their weights and speeds etc etc.
Over here there are heaps of what they call 'Cross Cars' and the quickest ones run 600cc bike engines. The class minimum weight is 300kg and
is pretty easily achieved. I'll try and find you a link for one....

For the sake of another 11kg I'd have the extra 40+ bhp

Hi. There's hundreds of these over here. There are three classes.
D3 2CV motors with very strict cost controls on everything
D2 Up to 500cc twin cylinder motors (500CB and 500GpZ are popular)
D1 Up to 600cc. The popular motor was the old PC31 600 CBR but you will find R6s, GSXRs but very few Kawas.
There are lots of championships both regional and a national jobbie.
Lots of chassis are scratch built but there are also a number of constructors. Get your Google 'translate' button ready here.

For some video stick "kart cross video" in Google with the search setting on French language. You'll see that there is all sorts going
on from the agricultural to some very sophisticated kit.
Hope this helps. Shout if you need more.....
Cheers,
