R1 5VY which oil
richiekuk - 29/4/13 at 07:55 PM

Hey all.

On top of my airbox it states to use 20w40 oil in my 5vy. Will that change as the engine is now in a car?

Not sure what's in it at the moment. But accusump issues mean I need to drain and refill the oil. I actually intend to put the same oil back in, as its hardly done any miles at all. I'm going to but an extra litre just incase.

Cheers.

I'm using 10/40 Silkolene Comp4 in mine. My Yamaha manual lists 10/30 or 20/40 depending on ambient temps.

What mods have you done to it? They need baffle plate, slight oil overfill and a breather modification to be reliable. I don't know of anyone running an Accusump on one.

Make sure you use bike oil not car oil.
Car oils can lead to clutch slip.

For road use I would use Silkolene Super 4 10W-40 Semi-synthetic 'Ride' bike engine oil.

I use Maxima Extra4 synthetic 15w50, Recommended and sold by Andy Bates.

It's got a baffled sump, breather mods, the accusump was there when I bought it, but as I think it has issues I've disconnected it, and need to drain the engine and put the correct amount back in (with 250 ml overfill).

As I'm going to reuse the oil I take out (hardly any miles on it). Would it be ok to use a different grade for the extra, as I don't know what is in it. Or should I just drain it all and put all new in?

I'm on a track day tomorrow so it'll get a good thrashing.

It'll mix fine.

Cool, I've just found 500ml of 15w50 I had for my last bike. That should do nicely!

Can you tell I'm new to this BEC lark.

I use 15-50w fully synthetic, either the maxim stuff supplied by andy b or silkolene pro. Engine now on its 3rd season racing. Sump was clean when I pulled it over the winter
