Wishbone failure variation on a theme
Slimy38 - 23/8/13 at 05:03 PM

Just seen this pop up on the MX5 forum, it struck a chord with me based on the advice I've already been given about wishbones and bushes;

Says he fitted poly bushes
Recon the inner tube was to short or the bushes to wide
Rest poly bush does not move on the crush tube, pressed steel wishbone fractures

Messing with OEM setup by adding poly bushes mixed with lack of attention to an older vehicle. The metal may not be "lightweight" but overloaded and corroded components are going to fail!

Have to agree with all of the above. Still amazes me that people will spend thousands on "power" upgrades and ignore the basics. Why take chances on the 4 bits of the car that keep you on the road. Basic maintenance should have spotted that before the failure happened.

its the piece of crap ali crush tube that has corroded and then seized that caused the failure, crush tubes should be stainless to prevent exactly that happening.

It looks like it has been driven around with fractured wishbone for months.

It's hard to believe that someone ever thought that aluminium was a suitable material for this application. I wouldn't even consider poly-bushes for a road car these days to be honest.

Yup! The pic posted in the linked thread seems to make that evident.

Anyone got a pic of undamaged MX5 'bone for comparison? Looking again at this pic, there seems to be some areas of metal missing(?).
