Failed iva
wandr - 16/5/19 at 10:06 PM

Recently failed IVA at Southampton on a few minor things, mainly sharp edges as most people seem to, the most challenging thing is a fail on the edge of the acewell Digi Speedo unit, strange as it's a plastic pod so couldn't cut you if it tried !! Has anyone failed on one of these and if so how did you get round it ? Car wouldn't run cleanly so Speedo and noise check couldn't be done, wouldn't rev above 3000 without spluttering and messing about, twin 40's being supplied fuel by an automatic pump from an MGB, did it under load or just reving without load, any ideas ?

With the speedo, I assume it is in the centre of the dash? Because anything behind the steering wheel is exempt.
You could make a perspex cover to fit over the speedo with rubber edge trim around it, or cut a hole the shape of the speedo
and recess into the dash?
I recessed all the instruments, although the speedo was in the exempt area.

With regards to the fuel pump, I would think an electric pump matched to the 40's would be better.

check/replace the fuel filters

Suspect a good rolling road set up would sort the carbs and possibly the ignition timing?

Recess the speedo in the dash. Anything under a certain amount (I forget how much) is exempt from the radius test. A good way to make a tester is to drill the correct sized hole in some thin ali and cut it into four with the hole in the centre leaving you a perfect radius tester

I made this to cover my instruments at an SVA:

Speedo Cover (SVA)
Speedo Cover (SVA)

Malpassi filter king is an adjustable fuel pressure regulator that will stabilise fuel pressure to the carbs.
I don’t know what an MGB automatic fuel pump is set to and as you don’t state what engine your running? Who knows!
However Weber’s need a certain constant fuel pressure so google it and get it set.
If it’s not been setup on a rolling road your carbs could be anywhere.

CAD up some temporary speedo edge covers and get shapeways to 3d print them, then sell them on the shapeways site to pay back your initial cost?

I recessed mine in the dash but it is behind the steering wheel anyway so was exempt

It ranks as a "good fail".
Nothing major which aren't fixable with a bit of time and effort.
I'd be inclined to look at Woolies to see if there's a trim you can stick on temporarily for your re-test. Don't know if it's possible but worth consideration.
BTW mine failed SVA (!) because the tester couldn't see the speedo beyond 85mph - WTF?
