Stripping an Escort Mk2 steering rack?
David Jenkins - 9/9/12 at 11:06 AM

Simple question - how easy is it to take apart and service an Escort Mk2 steering rack?

I've been moving the rack back and forth today, and it feels very notchy in a couple of places. It's possible that a tooth or two got damaged when I crashed, so I really think I need to get in there and make sure that everything is OK. I'd hate to be driving along and have a tooth fail, or to have a broken bit get into the gearing when steering.

However, it might only be a bit of displaced dirt, or a burr on a tooth.

If it's seriously broken then I'll replace it, but I'd like to have a good look in there first (tight-fisted? Me?!)

Any help appreciated - instructions, links to website instructions, etc.

In normal wear and tear racks only wear around the centre as a result if it has been adjusted to remove play in the centre it will be stiff at full lock both ways.

A bent rack has similar symptoms but might only be tight on one side.

With wear the only ways round the problem are either to comprimise on adjustment or fit a new rack.

With a bent rack only cure is a new rack.

It's smooth over all of the travel - it's just that I can feel something odd in 1 or 2 places.

In answer to the question asked, it's relatively easy to strip the mk2 escort rack, the only bit that is not obvious is that the track rod ball joints locking pins need to be drilled out, the haynes manual gives drill size and depth but I can't remember off the top of my head. Also don't lose the shims which are underneath the pinion pinion bearing housing.

Cheers

I can scan the relevant pages of the manual if you want but won't be until tomorrow night?

No - it's OK - I found my Haynes manual (after turning the house and garage over while looking for it!)

Ah well - it looks like I need a new rack... order going in today...
