Ford Granada LSD
h2o - 24/2/16 at 07:02 PM

Hi all,

I've been asked to post this by a family member so I know very little about the usage for this particular LSD, all I do know is that it came from a 1981 Granada 2.8, open to offers, buyer to collect.

The tag suggests it should be a 7.5" diff with a 3.36:1 ratio and the ford viscous lsd - that's fairly rare ratio and even rarer with the lsd.
Its also a good choice for V8 cars and some bike engines too...

The problem is that tags are easily swapped, so your sale would do better if you can confirm its spec
The main things are:

Its size - 7" or 7.5". (this is the crown wheel size, but you can tell from the casing
Its ratio - either count the number of input turns to get 1 turn of the outputs or take the rear cover off and count the teeth
That it really has a 'working' lsd
The type and size of the output shafts / stubs

Many thanks for the advice, I'll try and take the back off of it this weekend and get some more pictures of it, I'm sure it will be of use to someone. Just as an aside, I'm 99.9% sure its accurate as its my Father in laws, and he bought it new to replace the one that came standard on his 81 Granada 2.8i Ghia, then swapped the original one back in when he sold it. Its been sat in his garage every since.

Surely if it's from a 1981 Granada then that would be the MK 2 which , I believe, never had a LSD fitted as a ford option and is a different diff anyway, to that used in the later Mk3? (Which maybe the tags are from?)
Or is it a typo and it's from a 1991 Granada?
A pic or two of the whole diff would help identify if it's from a mk2 or mk3 Granada.

He didn't have it fitted by ford as an option, but bought it after the fact and had it fitted later. I'm pretty sure he said it was from a 1981 Ford Granada, but I've asked him to confirm, and get me some more pictures from all the way around the diff for confirmation, hope this helps.

Looking at the casting no. it shows 85. ford used that part of the no. to show the part was released in that year, so I don't think it would have been fitted in 81!

sorry I did mention earlier "He didn't have it fitted by ford as an option, but bought it after the fact and had it fitted later." I don't know whether the car was brand new when he got it or not but I doubt it. As mentioned before I can only give the information I have however. I'm digging up some more.

The point they are getting at is a 1981 Granada would be a mk2 (77-85)

the later mk3 Granada (85-94) aka the mk1 scorpio is the one that shares a lot of parts with Sierra's
(the same 2.8 V6 was in the late mk2's and early mk3's)

so in this pic the mk2 Granada is the top one and the mk3/sierra one is at the bottom

from what I can see in your pics it looks like the later one - he could have got it assuming it would fit the 1981 car, but if he'd tried he'd have got a nasty surprise.....

Thanks, I do understand what they meant, but I'm beginning to think he has the incorrect date of the his Granada, and that it must have been a 1991, not 1981 as he has stated. He is adamant the diff was installed by him (garage) and removed and the original diff returned to the car before he got rid of it. I'll gather some pictures tomorrow to clear it up, but from what you are saying, it could actually be compatible with some builds that have used sierra donors ?

mcerd1 - 26/2/16 at 12:26 AM

But a 91 Granada would have been a 2.9 V6.....

As per my first reply none of this matters as long as you can confirm the spec

And yes, if its a mk3 Granada diff then its basically identical to a Sierra one, although some kits can only fit a 7" one and yours could easily be the bigger 7.5"
(both sizes were used on both models depending on the spec)

I'm actually using a Granada donor for my dax rush in place of the sierra
donor stripping 2
donor stripping 2

Hope these help a little more, took these this afternoon, and he is adamant it was fitted to a mk2 Granada that was on a 81 plate, he bought the car in 82 and fitted the diff in 85.
