series 3 landy or 4x4

hi

i'm on the look out for a series 3 landy, which runs, with mot but can be rough just need something for the winter months and then could turn into my project. where is the best place to look for 1 they are fetching good money on bay so that is a no no.

Why not a discovery. Some seem quite cheap.
Must be simular underneath.

Just change the Chealsea Tractor tyres

Series 1, 2 and 3 Landies are leaf-sprung. All Discoverys are coil-sprung.

The series 1, 2 and 3 are also not full time 4x4, they are rear-wheel drive , with 4x4 available by pressing a LARGE yellow knob downwards. They should not be driven on hard paved roads whilst in 4x, as they have no central diff, and this can result in catastrophic wind-up and failure of transmission parts and axles.
All Discoverys are permanent 4x4 and have a central diff.

Series 1, 2 and 3 Landies have drum brakes, front and rear ( and also on the transmission hand-brake, on the rear prop-shaft).
All Discoverys have disc-brakes all round, the earlier (maybe all) have a drum-braked transmission hand-brake on the rear prop-shaft.

Not a little similar or at all simular.

all factory landy's rust, chassis and bulkheads are usually a right mess. The later 90's etc are really vastly better than the older leaf sprung ones as far as road performance. Only die hard nutters should go for series ones as those are crude, slow and noisy (I've owned 4 in the past btw)

Forgot to mention that you can buy road legal mud and snow rally tyres for your ordinary car which should allow it to plough through most snow like a 4x4

You'll need good arm muscles for the steering and a meaty right leg for the brakes
which become interesting when wet......
My friend didn't christen it the "Arbitary Direction Pedal" for no reason

I just helped a friend put a tdi engine in a series 2a. He rebuild the old body tub onto a new galvanised chassis and ran it for a couple of months with the 2.25 petrol engine On a good day it did 12mpg and on a bad one it was down to 8mpg

Series 2 Discovery's are not bad for rust, build quality was a huge leap forward from the series 1 that leaked and rusted at the sight of a cloud or puddle.

Series 2 are cheap and if its only a winter hack go for an ear;y S model without all the bells and whistles, its the extras that will give you the heartache if anything even on a well serviced one regardless of the age and mileage......
