Home made rust remover gloopy stuff - ideas...
Mr Whippy - 3/6/19 at 12:02 PM

Got a rusty'ish Fiesta subframe and various bits that have crusty rust on them I'd like to get back to bare metal but can't be arsed removing them off the car for a electrolysis bath clean, the cars in enough bits as it is...

Anyone tried making their own rust remover gloop or the like I can leave on for a few days to get it cleaned? was thinking of mixing something with vinegar.

Cheers

If you're on the lovely world of Facebook, check out a guy called Craig Jones who runs a company called Buzzweld - they offer various products and coatings etc. and are proving a big hit in the Land Rover world. These include rust inhibitors, sealants, paints and the like. Probably not as locost as you'd hope, but might save you in time what it costs you in pennies!

As lots of people swear by citric acid for rust removal I would have thought that combined with a thickener like cornflour, Agar or gelatine would be a good bet - and cheap too.

Not so exciting - I use phosphoric acid at about 999,990 dollars less

I have used hydrochloric acid/brick cleaner to get most of the rust off stuff, need to take care etc.
And 5 litres of 80% phosphoric acid is about £25 on fleabay, dilute about 5-10:1.

As to gloop, just wet paper towels with it, and seal with clingfilm. That will stop it drying out.

Cool thanks I'll have a look at that, brick cleaner should be easy to get hold of.

Last night I tried vinegar and gelatin which seemed to go well and turned into a clear gel I brushed on but in the morning it was all gone and no obvious improvement. The gel has also gone so stiff it cannot be brushed on anymore. Oh well I tried...

Hi,

Try https://mistralie.co.uk/products/gel-rust-remover

It's used by boat yards to clean rust spots from GRP hulls.
