Running problems - help!
lsdweb - 4/5/08 at 09:26 PM

Hi All

I'm having huge problems getting my R1 (5VY) to run.

The engine is running on an Emerald ECU and I'm using the map that the previous engine (5JJ) ran on (rolling roaded at Track and Road in Essex), which should be pretty close.

It's started a few times but doesn't run for long. Most of the time it turns over but it seems to be soaking with fuel. The plugs are drenched in fuel very quickly and it's blowing fuel out of the exhaust! Although, if it's turning over and firing the injectors without firing, it's bound to get wet!

The daft thing is, is that the Lambda sensor is showing a very lean mixture (15.9 AFR), although this could be soaked in fuel and misreading.

Here are some screen dumps.

I'm not sure about the injector timing; is 320 degrees After TDC the best time to fire the injectors?

Any thoughts?

Wyn

The one thing I've thought of is that the fuel in the tank is about 9 months old - I'm not sure if this would have gone off totally?

Shouldn't have - the fuel in my fury is over 12 months old and it still starts on the button...

Is the temp sender set up correctly, if it thinks its -40 degrees it will throw fuel in.

A later engine may have different values on these things.

Thanks guys

I'm going to change the fuel just in case (there's hardly any left now anyway!

Mark - the sensors are fine and reading correctly.

I'm a bit stumped now

Sorted! I think......

The bike runs sequential injection (firing once per cycle) but I'm running grouped (firing in pairs) as I haven't got the cam sensor working yet. So, I've been firing in twice as much fuel! I just halved the setting in the software and it fired and ran on the button!

I think I've wrecked my exhaust sensor though as it's been drenched with petrol and is reading 22 AFR in fresh air.

Might be worth doing a fresh air calibration on your lambda - assuming wideband type of course.

In fact I think it would read full scale lean (ie about 22) in fresh air. It what i get in overrun with fuel cut off.

Thanks Chris

I've done that - it's down to about 15.9 now so it's heading in the right direction! It's an LC-1 by the way.
