Wiring hazards and indicators with toggle type switches using sierra loom
Mash - 30/5/16 at 07:40 PM

Hi folks

I'm trying to ditch my sierra stalks, both for looks, and also because they're rubbish, and go for a simple toggle switch dash layout instead, but I'd like to use the loom and the flasher unit.

I've managed to make the indicators work with an on-off-on toggle, and now I'm trying to make the hazards work, and also connect up a tell tale on the dash for hazards.

I'm ALMOST there, using a couple of relays when the hazard switch is operated, but little things keep cropping up due to the way I've wired it all.

So, simple question, has anyone done this, and made it work, and, if so, is there any chance you could post a wiring diagram that I could crib as it's driving me mad, and I'm not brilliant at electrics

Thanks in advance

This may help you out.

Forget the colours as I'm not sure what they are off and replace the nova switch with your working toggle switch but all still the same idea.

Thanks Mate. Still a bit confused, but I guess a couple of diodes will sort out my problems. Is there any specific value I should get?

There are some on Maplin with the part code N92CA that should do the job, the store near me is helpful so just let them know what you are using them for and they should be able to confirm that they are up to the task.

You shouldn't need any relays with your hazard switch using the diagram below, but if you want to post a diagram of how you have yours wired at the moment I am happy to edit it so that it will work.

unfortunately with this circuit the ignition has to be on for the hazards to work ;-(

That is easy to fix with a permanent live instead of the switched one.

indeed it is, however that would mean the ordenary indicators would also work without the ignition on. (which isn't altogether a bad idea)

this might help.....

Hmm. ...the extra "hazard warning light" is wrong......but you don't need one if both indicator light come on and the hazard switch is clearly marked for hazards.

Have a look at the MX5 mk1 setup as the hazard light switch is just a switch to earth. if you can replicate what they have done you may be onto a winner, that's if it is possible of course!

Thanks guys for all your input.

I have managed to wire up the indicators using the switched live and the two indicator feeds, and they work fine. So I've moved n to the hazard side, and managed to get that to work using a double pole switch and a relay to change from switched live to permanent live. Turn the switch on and it changes the live feed and works all of the lights.
What I need now really is to understand how the sierra telltale gets it's power from the sierra switch which is really complicated.

Think I may have to live with it for now, and then rip it all back out and start from scratch when I have more time.
