Tin top tyres
roadrunner - 8/11/12 at 11:12 AM

I need to replace the front tyres on my Audi quattro and I wanted half decent grip in the wet this time.
I have been pricing up these 235x40x18
1- Toyo ts1

2-Vredestein sessantas

3- Falken fk452
Has anyone used these or have ideas on other tyres that might be worth looking at.

I am trying to get them on the car for around £250 all in.

Thanks
Brad

I prefer the Falken 912s over the 452s, the 452s I had wore out quite quickly.

Was an early fan of the Toyo T1S (not heard of the ts1?), however however the latter sets I bought of these seem to wear out quicker than the 1st few sets.

never tried Vredestein.

my 452s wore quite well on my gtr when i used them.

im running on maxxis ZS1 i think they are on my 335d, the vredesteins are supposed to be quite good apparently, thought they were quite pricy in comparison to falkens though last time i looked?

I guess it depends on what you are looking for in a tyre - ultimate dry grip? wet grip? long life? quiet?
(I suppose this is were these new EU labels are meant to help....)

I've run a few different vredestein's for years and I love them
although I've not had ones as fancy as the ones your looking at mind...

currently running 195/60R15 sportrac3's most of the time (they seem to have been replaced with sportrac5's recently), but swap to quatrac3's in the winter as they deal better with the cold roads covered in muck/grit/leaves/snow....

used to run t-trac's on the 106 - great little budget tyres, night and day difference to the toyo's, hankook's and avon's I'd had before

I do find the sportrac's wear quite quickly compared to some, but when new they grip like a tyre twice the price
once they get a bit past half worn (3 to 4mm left) they seem to loose a bit of there edge, but I change around 3mm anyway so no big deal to me
I've had them through so fairly extreme weather (remember the floods at morpeth a few years back..) and I can't ever remember aquaplaning at any speed - always felt planted to the road, even when the 4x4 in front was fish-tailing all over the place
the best bit for me is the way the steering feels, its so precise with loads of feedback/feel, I've not found anything quite like it considering that its a 60% profile tyre!

they arn't the best when its properly cold though (feels like they have suddely turned into very cheap budget tyres) - but thats when I swap to the quatrac's (I've ended up with a complete spare set of wheels + spares, so its a 10min job to swap)
the quatrac3's don't have the same feel in the steering, they make alot more noice and use a little bit more fuel, but they had me out driving on untreated roads every day of both bad winters we had.
I can also report they are good at getting out of muddy music festival car parks too

I promise I don't work for them, just a happy customer

out of those it would be the sessantas for me. Had a set on my 320d and they were excellent, I have quatracs on the family Zafira bus and they are really good too. I need a new set for my new car and it will be the sessantas that go on it.

Toyo are good, not keen on the falken they are hopeless in the wet. for the price go for the vreds.

Gone for the Vredesteins sessanta's, £215 delivered from Camskil.
£20 to be fitted. Other companies wanted £285 fitted.

Thanks fellas.

Brad.

Let us know how you get on, that's not a bad price for two tyres in that size.
the same as what I paid for mine so will try then next time if good!

As long as you have a decent tyre place handy that will fit tyres that you haven't bought from them, you really cant beat camskill for tyres. I've lost count of the number of friends and family who were quite happy paying quikfit prices until i redirected them to camskill. I think I should be on commision

First Impressions of the sessantas?
