My R1ot
Phil_1471 - 6/2/16 at 09:08 AM

Hi All,
New to the forum and just thought I would say hello and share some pictures of my R1ot winter rebuild.
There's a few in the link below if you fancy a browse (not that exciting) would be interested in speaking to other R1ot owners to talk about car setups etc.

Any comments / opinions welcome

Cheers
Phil

Nice looking car.

james h - 6/2/16 at 09:37 AM

Very nice!

CosKev3 - 6/2/16 at 10:06 AM

Looks good

What power did it make on the RR?

When you say 'winter rebuild' Presuming it's all road legal and you've rebuilt it/modded it to your liking?

adithorp - 6/2/16 at 12:03 PM

Nice looking motor. What year R1 is it?

motorcycle_mayhem - 6/2/16 at 12:44 PM

My guess is that it's an older 4XV, looking at the airbox, the carbs, the different crankcase colours and the gearchange input.

Power on a RR will be anything from 110-200 BHP, depending on the usual variables, including what anyone may want to say, or hear.

We all know how RR'S can be worked,so pointless pointing that out tbh.

Phil_1471 - 6/2/16 at 03:07 PM

Thanks for the kind comments.
I'm just overhauling everything minus the engine as that's okay. I'm lucky to have a mate with a rolling road, it's an old road but we have used it for years and the power reading has always been bang on and most importantly consistent.
The engine is standard 1998 R1 4xv, made 150ish bhp, so with loss through transmission about 135-140bhp. So bang on what it should be.

Just need some ideas on setups, tyre pressures etc, will be hiring blyton or fulbek for a day to have a play around with setup and tyres.

Phil_1471 - 15/2/16 at 08:42 PM

After a number of 'unsuccessful' sessions in the garage which resulted in me throwing tools around...
I have finally made a little progress, airfilter on and exhaust packed

Folder updated with a few quick pics....thoughts on postcards

Hi
Nice looking car, looks like its been finished off well, reminds me why it took so long to decide, Riot or J15.

Always fancied one of these nearset thing to a kart on the road! Looks a great build.

nick205 - 18/2/16 at 08:44 AM

Looks very smart - always like the R1OT to look at.

As above it must be very go-kart like to drive

One thing I can recommend is having the car setup for suspension geometry and the engine setup for fueling etc. It makes a world of difference when all done correctly. Whereabouts are you based? People on here may be able to recommend a suitable place to help.

Phil_1471 - 18/2/16 at 01:27 PM

again, thanks for positive comments

Im in Nottingham, and definitely interested in knowing how other have set there up as regards chassis and tyre pressures etc. I have the gear to set it up myself, but not really looked at setups etc yet. Fuelling was bang on with K&N and standard airbox, now its been changed I will set it up again on the rolling road (lucky to have this option).

Any input welcome!

nick205 - 18/2/16 at 01:53 PM

Not specific to the R1OT, but I used to run around 17psi in 195/50R15s on my MK Indy, much higher and it slipped around a bit at the back end.

Phil_1471 - 18/2/16 at 04:25 PM

Currently running about 12psi all round

Fair enough, IIRC my Indy with Pinto and a full tank of fuel weighed at 600kg, I'd imagine your car is lighter?

Phil_1471 - 19/2/16 at 10:09 AM

I think it's 480kg but will have it on the corner scales soon and check :-)

Any idea what temp the fan is meant to cut in at on a standard R1? Just started her for the first time since rebuild ran up to 115c no fan, shorted out the contacts and know it's not the fan as that spun up.

Phil_1471 - 19/2/16 at 10:25 AM

And..... If you fancy a laugh at me and my commentary;

No experience with bike engines, but 115 degrees seems high to me. My VAG cars seem to sit at 90 degrees (although they sit there rock solid on the gauge I believe there must be some variation in actual temperature between moving and stationary).

CosKev3 - 19/2/16 at 12:32 PM

Bike engines do run hot if you use the bike sensor etc.

I've used a electronic controller with my R1 engine and have it set to run at nearer car engine temps, kicking in at 98 degrees.

CosKev3 - 19/2/16 at 12:37 PM

Ref fueling mine running a big open filter and car based exhaust manifold with a worked head needed 145 main jets to get the fueling correct, produced 163bhp though

Phil_1471 - 19/2/16 at 12:56 PM

Using a cut back standard manifold, so, slightly shorter and standard jets (as far as I know),, before changing to the foam filter was slightly rich... Will stick it on the rollers with Lambda on and find out soon. What electronic controller have you used??

CosKev3 - 19/2/16 at 06:01 PM

TOP GAUGE Universal Itouch Fan Super Controller Water Oil Temp Voltage Gauge

Works well, mounted sensor into outlet of R1 thermostat housing.
Displays temp and flashes when fan is running

Riot Squad - 19/2/16 at 06:52 PM

Hi Phil, I really like your Riot build, very tidy, they always look so good in black as well I think!

We run on our Demo car engine Riot, 500 kg 1.6 Ecoboost open diff. (Also has a wider Rear Track than the original Riot)
19 psi all round.
1mm of toe-in front and rear.
1 degree negative camber front.
1.5 degrees negative on the rear.
This is on 205/50x15 Toyo Proxes road tyres

We found this set up following a track session (Castle Combe Circuit) it was very predictable and compliant it took the kerbs easily without any upsetting the balance and still kept that excellent turn in..
We plan to try softer tyres this year to see how far we can improve cornering grip.

Hope that gives you a good start point
Miles

Phil_1471 - 20/2/16 at 10:17 AM

Cheers Mikes, will give them a try, 19psi sounds high though, what are your spring rates and dampers?

Kev- I'm Going to put a car thermo switch in, I think.

Phil_1471 - 21/2/16 at 06:09 PM

All engine wiring and ancillaries tied up (minus crank breather) and also some heat shielding done.

Phil_1471 - 26/2/16 at 07:41 PM

Boot air scoop on
Boot fitted
Bulk head in
Pedals on (some final adjustment to be done)
Bit of a clean (worlds dustiest garage)
All pipes, cables etc tied up

Photos if your bothered --> http://s399.photobucket.com/user/phil_bucket_photo/library/R1ot%20rebuild

DRM Black7 - 26/2/16 at 10:54 PM

Fantastic looking car there

Phil_1471 - 27/2/16 at 03:26 PM

Cheers pal :-) should be out the garage in a couple of weeks just in time for the sun... Hopefully

Phil_1471 - 2/3/16 at 07:18 PM

Re greased all cv's and replace boots clip with proper ones not tie wraps might keep cv grease in!!
Diff bearings changed.
Wheels bearings regressed and checked.
But of a concern with the diff, slight float on mount about 2-3mm sideways movement, anybody else had this? It's a poor design so doesn't surprise me really.
Also put more cv grease in diff, which I think I'm going to regret as shafts don't look like they seat in well either... Thoughts??

Phil_1471 - 8/3/16 at 08:09 AM

Finally managed to get it back together and off the tressels.

She is now sat in wheels almost ready for a quick spin around the block.. Not quite running right though, flaming on idle.. Ergh

jeffw - 8/3/16 at 09:08 AM

Normal road tyres (like the ones you are using) have a soft(er) sidewall and will not tolerate very low pressures like 12psi. You really need to very high teens/low 20s on those tyres.

We only run as low as 14-15 on motorsport tyres in sprinting so we can work the sidewalls to heat the tyres as quickly as possible.

It sounds like you need softer springs and higher tyre pressures.

Phil_1471 - 22/4/16 at 07:34 PM

Back on the road :-) happy days!

Phil_1471 - 4/6/16 at 10:34 PM

And we are back in the garage again...
Trying to get the slicks to fit - done
Realising my wheel studs are too short - check
Ordering the wrong size wheel studs - done
Waiting.... Waiting....
Fit new studs - easy
Wheel arches still don't fit, adapt and adjust -8hours
Get another new set or rims and tyres - please
Finally getting everything to fit - not quiet there, sigh!
