7 year build - my Locost
Megatron-UK - 2/4/06 at 09:31 AM

I know these things tend to drag on a bit... but I reckon we've taken the biscuit; 7 years from fabricating the chassis to now - and it's still not finished!

It's a book-based chassis (altered where necessary and a bit custom here and there), live Ford English axle (3.89:1), Cortina uprights, Princess 4 pots, K-Series metro dual circuit servo and brake proportioning valves, Escort radiator, Type-9 box with an extension mechanism and a pretty well worked over 2.1 Pinto -- all 'old school' really....

It's certainly not the best example out there, but in our defence when we started there was only a fraction of the suppliers out there - I think MK was the only person starting to make chassis at that point - Ron hadn't started any of his businesses yet.
Having said all that, we're pretty proud that apart from the GRP and Dax hoop, we've made every bit of the car ourselves - aluminium panels included!

We're trying to make a concerted effort to get the car finished in the next few months - otherwise it's just going to languish forever.

Here's my list of bits to do:
Replacement cooling fan (Spal, 10" )
Exhaust wrap (partly to hide mild steel) (ordered)
Piping/trim
- Edge of cabin
- Edges of bonnet / engine bay sides
- Back edge of bonnet / front of scuttle
Track rod end covers (ordered)
Ally for a boot lid / tank cover
Locks/catches for boot lid
Oil cooler & take off plate
Relay for fan
New horn
New gear gaitor
Fuel pres. regulator & gauge (ordered)
Air filters
Cut bonnet for air filters & stick on air vents
Reinforced mounts/straps to attach seat bases
Edging/radiused pipework
- Around top of dash
- Bottom of dash
Rubber strip for base of fly screen
Speedo drive conversion
Mirrors (ordered)
Paint

Work owes me some time off, so I'm thinking about taking a week or two once we get most of the parts in and just making a big push to get it to the point where it can be painted, inspected, rolling roaded and then booked in to mr sva man.

No worries it took me 16 yrs to pluck up the courage to start Triton, you will get there when you get there.

WOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOO

Someone who's been building for longer than me!

THANK YOU!

I can now point people in your direction when they start taking the mickey out of me

Good luck with the rest of the build and remember, this isn't a race, its for fun.

Right, must dash, got a pedal box to mount.

(you've no idea how happy you're post has made me!)

It's terrible isn't it!

It seems as if there is always something new and 'sexier' that comes along and takes our attention away from it - we've built a clubman type mk1 Escort (avatar piccy) with an XE....

.... and a little mk1 MR2 with a 2000 3SGTE turbo instead of a 1600 4AGE, in the meantime....

too many distractions

... I've got to get this one finished before my father starts to rebuild his Triton 650 - I'll never get it done if he starts on that!

Brook_lands - 2/4/06 at 03:11 PM

Megatron-UK - 2/4/06 at 03:22 PM

Hahaha, I'm not the slowest then

chrisg - 2/4/06 at 06:05 PM

I knew you'd turn up here eventually Rory!

I'm another one that took seven years, but I did it cheap. Everything comes to he who waits.

Cheers

Chris

James - 3/4/06 at 10:36 AM

Just gone through my 4-year anniversary.

Still, we're all doing better than a guy I met on my welding course. He's been going 8/9 years and although he'd done the wishbones he hasn't finished his chassis yet!

Cheers,
James

i'm actually thinking i could possibly complete next year.......... possibly this year if things go really well ........

just got to get over a few hurdles, a big one is going to be painting the chassis and buying the GRP.

(ok, i know thats two)

auzziejim - 6/4/06 at 04:56 PM

its been 3 years already for me but i did have a 2 1/2 year break after i moved out of dads and left the car behind

i am loving the mk1 escy even though its a *cough cough* GM in a ford

i did however manage to build this before i remembered my poor old kit car
