Vote for the Scots contingent
zilspeed - 18/2/10 at 08:47 AM

East Vs West

If you're from that strange place south of Gretna, you may not answer the question as it has been specifically coded for the purposes of this discussion.

Please, please vote for what you know is only right and proper....

alistairolsen - 18/2/10 at 08:56 AM

First time I got offered salt and sauce in Livingston I was like WTF

SeaBass - 18/2/10 at 09:16 AM

unless they think its curry sauce - yuck

mookaloid - 18/2/10 at 10:10 AM

clearly 'salt and vinegar' is the correct answer.

Also clearly - 'salt and sauce' is another attempt by those of us who are from the North of Gretna to confuse and gain a psycholocolgical advantage over those of us who hail from South of Gretna when purchasing Fish and Chips. This ploy is clearly doomed to fail as by starting this thread we are now enlightened

iank - 18/2/10 at 10:12 AM

Surely it should be
"Deep Fried Mars bar"
or
"Gin and Tonic"

iscmatt - 18/2/10 at 10:36 AM

See, that's why the Egnlish were banned.

You wouldn't neccesarily appreciate that salt and vinegar / Salt and sauce isn't a Scotland / England thing, it's an East - Vs - West issue.
They're weird over there in the east, eh ?

cd.thomson - 18/2/10 at 10:48 AM

i voted salt and sauce. Ketchup in fact.

the East side is best
chippy sauce everytime

(for the english - you'll never have had chippy sauce unless you've been for a chippy in edinburgh/ lothian/ fife )

Thank F you're here Blake, I was starting to worry there.
All we need now is to get Big Andy onside and we'll be good to go.

blakep82 - 18/2/10 at 11:39 AM

next i'm going to start a thread on what we all think of island folk. they're all a bit shifty
i don't like it when they come over on the ferry, drive at 20mph, brake when a car comes the opposite way, and indicate for a bend in the road. islanders from dunoon are the worst

LOL

For the education of an ignorant southerner, what is the "sauce" in "salt and sauce"? Normal ketchup or a special Scottish concoction?

according to the internet, salt and sauce are britains most famous elephants...
never had of it myself, but apparently its a mixture of malt vinegar and brown sauce. ewww...

MikeRJ - 18/2/10 at 01:10 PM

"Gold Star brown sauce". If that's anything like HP brown sauce then it seems like a good plan to me; I've never been keen on vinegar with fish and chips, normally just have salt.

EDIT: Just seen Blakes reply, sounds revolting!

cd.thomson - 18/2/10 at 01:39 PM

actually that sounds peng.. now where can I get some down here

mcerd1 - 18/2/10 at 01:52 PM

sounds like one of us will have to take a bottle to stoneleigh

[Edited on 18/2/10 by mcerd1]

scootz - 18/2/10 at 02:00 PM

Salt and LOTS of sauce all the way! It's just so dry and tasteless without it!

The 'sauce' is a mixture of malt vinegar and brown sauce... I've seen a reference to 'Gold Star' brown sauce - it's similar, but more 'runny' and slightly more 'vinegar-gry'.

One of my biggest frustrations is that they don't do 'sauce' in Aberdeenshire... shame really as their fish and chips are the best!

As for Engurlund... what is it with leaving the skin on the fish - get rid of it!

And those of you living in the Tyne and Wear area... 'scraps'??? And they say that the deep fried Mars-Bar (something I've never actually seen in any Scottish chippie) is unhealthy!?

Richard Quinn - 18/2/10 at 03:12 PM

Seeing as we are diversifying geographically, what about a "pea wet"?

cd.thomson - 18/2/10 at 03:16 PM

Mushy peas with your sunday dinner than a nice thick piece of bread to mop up the gravy - thats about as wierd as it gets round my way.

andyw7de - 18/2/10 at 05:07 PM

Salt and viniger is a must, then add some proper brown sauce the thick stuff, none of you namby pamby watered down east coast p*sh

Richard Quinn - 18/2/10 at 05:15 PM

Brown sauce was made for sausages and bacon not fish!!

SeaBass - 19/2/10 at 03:59 PM

A mate of mine fae Wishaw (wishee) lives on munch boxes. He described them to me the other day. If that's what the West has to offer I'm alright thanks. What is with Toast & Beans too.
