Over the years of collecting tools I've bought a few in their own little storage boxes.
Many are decent make, Teng/Britool/US Pro for example but all too often the bits of
plastic that separate them either disintegrates or is crap from the start. In a 1/4"
drive Teng set the recesses are so shallow nothing stays in place.

So any suggestions for making new ones cheaply and simply ?

Throw away the plastic dividers and rivet socket rails and clips into the box, that's what I do any way.

Wood? Carve out the little bits for the tools.. I'd quite like that if I had a bunch in drawers

Yeh, I know what you mea, I got a Teng socket set when I was 17 and the hinge (thin plastic had finally broke through so enquired about there lifetime warranty, didn't even get a reply, so fixed it riviting on a bit of seatbelt webbing accross, works a treat.

I wonder if its because I'm 43 next year? If it wasnt going to get fixed then I'd fix some of those socket strips onto a bit of ali plate.

Socket rails woud be fine for the sockets themselves but still leaves the ratchet/extensions and spanners
free to do their own thing.
Thoght about wood but it's not a quick fix, for me anyway, I'm hopeless with wood.

Cut outs in a piece of foam or similar material.

just redidi my snapon boxes, couldnt afford their organiser prices so used halords, they actually do an ok range of organiser stuff, some of it only online though in my area, check this out:

If you are useless with wood then use plastic - same idea as the Halfrauds ones but make your own to suit your box - x halving joints like in your mothers cutlery tray /jewellery box, alsoyou can bend angles and curves with hot air gun and if it is ABS stick together with solvent cement so it doesn't all rattle to bits. We geta few thin strips at work and we keep a box of off cuts- I can rip it into strips and post if not long lengths.

Someone mentioned plastic cutlery trays, I found some that fitted perfectly in my toolbox drawers and help a lot to organize long thin tools.
