Late night quiz! What is this tool?
James - 3/5/12 at 10:42 PM

My friend who's a very experienced motorsport engineer has one of these in his garage.

He has no idea what it is...

You can wind the big nut down and clamp 'something' in between the two blocks. The groves in the blocks would suit round, square material (and another shape, I can't remember or see from my low-res photo).

You can also hit the top of it with a hammer as shown.

Any idea what the hell it is?

Cheers,
James

Paperweight?

FazerBob - 3/5/12 at 11:14 PM

Could it be for crimping terminals etc onto cables?

What it's not is a spare table,...

I'm going to guess at something to flatten or press things

Daddylonglegs - 4/5/12 at 07:24 AM

Another vote for crimping.

Difficult to tell the scale/size but...

Looks like a tool to put the square section onto the end of a speedo cable.

Making up custom cables from a loose roll hasn't been done in my time, though I was shown how to do it once-upon-a-time... There's a roll of speedo inner cable and a tool for doing it in a draw around here somewhere. The tool is similar to that but not as heavy.

I think its for putting nipples on throttle/brake cables etc.
Steve

Looks like a fairly standard type of body hammer to me?

kipper - 4/5/12 at 11:28 AM

It may be for forming a square end on speedo cables. Is there a prize?
Denis.

Peteff - 4/5/12 at 12:05 PM

It's a nail blackener, you screw down the nut with your finger under it the whack it with the big hammer, not that little claw hammer you have there. OK it's a heavy duty crimp really.

If there is, I guess it doesn't go to the second person that gets the answer

Another vote for putting the square bit on a speedo cable, in fact I remember using something similar in the dim and distant past. Fancy using a panel beating hammer for that job.!

I think that both jaws have a matching set of grooves.
