MX5 Box to Duratec
scootz - 7/12/09 at 06:15 PM

Has anyone used the MX5 RWD gearbox for a Duratec install? I'm assuming they're compatible *but am ready for my bubble to be burst!

you trying to save money on a bellhousing or do you just want a 6 speed box ?

Stuart_B - 7/12/09 at 06:22 PM

hi, i was going to use one, but they are around £500, plus you need the mazda flywheel, and clutch i think.

and the last bit was i think the mx5 engine maybe angled, from some photos i have seen.

i have the dimmesion of the mx5 box some where, i will have a look for them and post them up.

Needs to be a box from the latest MX5, not the early ones.

Bonus is they are 6 speed and have good ratios.

Downside is they are expensive and rather hard to come by.

Cheers guys...

PS - I have a bellhousing Robert - got one last night, but as always with these things, I was offered a 6-speed 2007 MX5 box and am just weighing up the pro's / cons!

PPS - seen your crane... quite impressive!

There is a guy doing the same swap to a MK1 on turbosport.

thats quite a leap from RS4 engined ultima

its only 21m high, it was going to be 28m, but it weighs 50 tonnes as it is

Dropped the RS4 heads into Alec at Engine Services... he reckons he'll have the engine back to me in a fortnight

I'd better hurry up and get that kidney sold!

mcerd1 - 8/12/09 at 06:51 AM

yeah you better
mine wasn't cheap and you've got 2x the number of pistons and 4x the number of cams and valves and I put mine back together myself

have you found a home for it yet ?

scootz - 8/12/09 at 12:23 PM

No... not yet - the idea of doing something outrageous with an 80's or 90's VAG coupe is appealing, but I would need to seriously improve my welding skills (or sell the other kidney to pay Woody!).

mcerd1 - 8/12/09 at 12:57 PM

you could stick it in a sierra

or maybe it'd fit in my scimitar

or a quick ebay search come up with these:

A Sierra???

You couldn't use a Sierra as the basis for a kit build!

I know that, thats why I'm using a Granada

after you dropped in earlier, I was wondering if the V8 would fit in the back of your fiesta

scootz - 8/12/09 at 07:45 PM

Sisters Fiesta!

... and no!

mcerd1 - 8/12/09 at 07:51 PM

well in that case I've got a spare shell with no engine......

its only done 151k and is in a 'used' but nonfuntional condition

-PS I think this thread is in danger of going off topic
