How to lead free my 1300 Xflow?
goodguydrew - 24/9/11 at 10:22 PM

Can anyone advise me how to convert my 1300 Xflow for unleaded?
Do I need the valve seats changed, or do I change the exhaust valves?
Thanks

It is the valve seats you need to have changed to cope with the extra heat. The valves should be fine unless damaged.
But that's all I know so far

Only the exhaust valve seats need changing.....
And like Greed1 said If the valves are in good condition they should be fine.....

Thanks guys. Will the Ford Ka head swap on?

wonderfulweasel - 25/9/11 at 10:26 AM

I don't think you can swap the head from a Ka. Although the Ka engine design is similar as it's a descendent of the Xflow, I think very few (if any) parts are interchangeable.

Ok, thanks for that.
So, does anyone have a converted head lying about?
What would the cost of such a conversion be?
Thanks

wonderfulweasel - 25/9/11 at 01:26 PM

I don't know how much it would cost to get one converted. Sometimes there are ones that are advertised as converted on Ebay.

I run mine without being converted, but use additive in the fuel. I've used both Redex and Castrol's additives in the past.

Get a quote from local engineering shop then nip down to Tescos etc where redex is about 99p a bottle even £50 worth of additive will get you once round the world

Nice to see an old engine given a breath of fresh air. Drop the head off to your local CNC specialist, have the valve seat changed. Its gunna cost you though........ i would take 200£.

Thanks for the advice.

Confused but excited. - 25/9/11 at 03:52 PM

I had my head done by Lyons Bros in South Wales.
Cost me £220 for a chemical clean, new valve seats (3 angle jobs), new bronze guides, new valves, new springs and a gentle skim up to true all the mating surfaces.
That's half what Burtons quoted me.

Thats what I did. Engine Services chap said if you do less than 2k miles a years its not worth spending £180 on conversion.

Yeah Alec's top bloke and comes higly recommended by almost everyone I know round here (and a few other folk on this site aswell) he's the one that did all the work on my 2.1 pinto
his ported x-flow heads look good too

Most folk I've talked to say to just keep an eye on the valve clearances, if they start wearing rapidly then its time to do something about it - otherwise its happy days
