Mazda MX-5 engine CAD models
sylva_phoenix - 20/12/12 at 09:32 PM

Hi, I am considering putting a mazda MX5 engine into my phoenix, but would like to mock it up in CAD first. I have trawled the web, but can't find a model of the engine (B6ZE). Would any kind Locostbuilder out there be able to help?

Many thanks
Laurence

If a Zetec would fit the teh B6 or BP enignes will fit, just watch the intake manifold on the 1.6 as it sits higher than the 1.8.

Thanks, I'm confident the engine will fit, but the gearbox might be a squeeze and as you mentioned the inlet plenum might foul. Also I am designing an exhaust manifold for a turbo installation so it would be useful to model it all first, just to ensure the correct clearances/orientation of pipe routing etc before I start cutting metal.

I have fitted an MX5 engine and box in what is a development of a MAC#1 chassis.

I have used a 6 speed box which required mods to the drivers footwell for the clutch arm and some small mods to the drivers side tunnel.

The 5 speed has the bulk on the passenger side so would need mods on that side.

The alternator might cause a problem with the steering column. I have quite a long section from the column before the first UJ to get it underneath the alternator.

I also shortened the sump by about 25-30mm so it is the same as the bellhousing now and sits 5mm below the chassis rail at most.

Looks a bit nicer powdercoated!

Did you you have to modify the oil pick up pipe in order to shorten the sump? Any photos would be appreciated. Looks good so far!

Have a look at this Westfield blogg

I didn't shorten mine, just bent it about a bit.

I'm pretty sure there is some stuff on there about the coolant reroute too. Basically how to get some coolant flow through to the 4th cylinder.

Sump how to

Thanks for pics and links. Hopefully I cam avoid too much modification of my chassis. Also the sylva chassis offsets the engine to passenger side, which might help. When do you plan to get yours on the road?
Cheers

Hi

The revised date is sometime in the spring. That's spring 2012 before Adi pops up! It will be at Stoneleigh!
