Ticking noise top end of my 2.0L Duratec, does this have solid or hydraulic lifters on the standard engine?

Solid lifters still available from ford or burton power.

I know you say top end but these are really common to do in the big end bearings.

Thanks, I have a tappy top end so need to identify the problem and thought maybe hydraulic lifter failing.
More diagnostics to do

I posted before seeing your reply, thanks.
Tapping comes and goes at certain revs and big ends would knock from idle
Of course I will properly investigate

If its bottom end youll hear it at 3k best

Pretty sure it's not bottom end, did the screwdriver test and its sounds top end exhaust cam side

Dick - 7/8/17 at 08:27 PM

Check the exhaust manifold to head gasket b4 you go to far have seen these give a noise that sounds like a tappet going

Thanks I'm on that as have been caught out on a Pinto before.
Did the screwdriver test on that as well

What about the cam chain?

snapper - 8/8/17 at 07:52 AM

No noise from that end of the engine but I'm aware that they can go.

davidimurray - 8/8/17 at 08:42 AM

Is this a stock engine setup? Could it be something like EGR valve or a gas leak? I suppose worn buckets could be an option. If you have a look in my Duratec swap gallery in my signature lots of photos of the engine in pieces.

Thanks
Yes I really need to get down in the weeds with this one
It's my Fiesta ST150 daily with 136,000 and I ring its neck daily
The trouble is that both kit cars are otherwise indisposed.
