Pinto stage 2 head FR30 cam advance
Bigkiltedwarrior - 12/9/17 at 03:28 PM

Hi,

I have a 2ltr Pinto with a Burton Power stage 2 head (lightly skimmed). It is fitted with a vernier pulley and a felpro blue head gasket (thinner). I believe that that the slight skimming will have retarded the cam timing so I have set the cam at 5 deg advanced on the vernier.

It is supposed to be set at 110 deg ATDC on inlet valve but I dont have the tools to set this up.

Does anyone have any experience of cam advance on the FR30 cam with a slightly skimmed head using just the vernier which is a standard key.

Additionally I am running a megajolt so have 3d mapping of my ignition timing.

Thanks
Stewart

Sounds like you're guessing the cam timing. You might get lucky but you're unlikely to get the best from the cam and at worst you'll bend valves. You moved it 5deg with reference to what? It really needs setting up properly. Get a cheap DTI gauge and print a degree wheel off the 'net.

It's 5 deg advanced from crank and cam set at TDC on cylinder 1.

Had the cam previously been set correctly at 110deg then?

No, just fitted and set at TDC markings when I replaced the head and cam. car runs great but was just wondering if there was an easier way of setting the cam from position on vernier from stock TDC.

You still have to find TDC
As there is a dwel just before and just after TDC the method is to use a timing dig on the crank you will need one
The idea is to mark where you piston stops moving and when it starts moving one use the middle of the two marks as TDC
You can the either set the inlet valve lift with a fit gauge or rotate the crank to the required ATDC say 110 degrees and use the unlocked vernier to move the inlet cam lobe to maximum lift, you can get pretty close without a drive.
I would certainly not just swing the cam arbitrarily by 5 degrees and see what happens.
