Got some garage time today so managed to get the engine out and the head and ancillaries all off.

It's pretty minging both inside and out with waterways blocked and oilways gunked. What's the best way to clean? Fairy liquid, wire brushes and pipe cleaners?

Just a bit concerned that anything acidic may damage the bored if dipped.

I spent a whole day cleaning mine with gunk red, gunk green and a couple of other alkali grease solvents. Took ages, covered me in minor chemical burns and was still mucky. If you can, drop it in to a place with a hot dip bath. Internal cleansing wasnt needed on mine, toyota's finest was clean as a whistle at 130K miles.

I took it to a engine builders and they chemical cleaned it for £20
Actually in end he skimmed it and sprayed it and cleaned it for £70 in end.

Sounds like a better plan. Will make some calls. Ta.

I rebuilt a grimy 2.0 Pinto for my MK Indy. I stripped the engine down, but entrusted the cleaning of parts to a local engine builder. They dipped the block to remove internal and external gunk from it. It came back in rather good form and from memory the cleaning cost less then £50 to have it done. When you balance that against the cost and muck involved in doing it yourself it was a no brainer to have it done by them.

For ali bits try using a toilet cleaner like Harpic Power Plus.
Usual caveats apply.

I did my cylinder heads in my parts washer. Or as her indoors calls it, 'the dishwasher'. It makes your plates smell like diesel for a few washes though.

Stuff rusts dead quick afterwards though

I done my S2000 engine, Used Autoglym engine cleaner which worked miracles at removing grease and crud that gunk wouldn't touch. I then spent a couple of evening with some cheap wire brush drill attachments, Finished off with 3 coats of engine enamel and it now looks brand new!

It was messy and If I had the engine stripped I'd have sent it off to be vapour blasted . A mate had this done and the block looked new!
