Simple Zetec question
Macks1001 - 24/11/20 at 10:21 PM

Engine: 2L Zetec blacktop

Apologies for the basic question, but can someone tell me what the "thing" is below the exhaust manifold and above the starter motor, sump and engine mount.

It looks like some kind of pressed steel water jacket with an outlet pipe at the rear, bolted to the side of the engine block.

Regards

Sounds like the Crank case breather

Yep crank case breather. Its job is to separate the oil and air. It has a pcv valve that release the vapours into the inlet manifold to be burnt off in the donor.

You have multiple options with what to do with it

I removed it, blanked it off with homemade plate and gasket. Zetec seems to run just fine without it after 10,000 miles.

I ran mine for three years with it blanked off but have found that the crank pressurisation is making the engine breath heavily past the oil seal around the oil dipstick and causing the underside of my car to constantly be covered in oil.

I made a new blank and put a breather hose from this to the oil catch tank which I am hopping has cured it but only managed a few trips out since fitting this.
