what is the smallest most compact v8/v6 engine around?

and how small? (height,width,length)

needs to be easily avavalaible & cheap, all alloy, deliver 200 bhp as standard.

With regards to size, with/without the gearbox?

I would say it is the engine made by a company in the Poole area which uses a pair of R1 engines mounted on a common crankcase to form a V8.
I don't think it meets your price criterion though.

V6 has got to be VW's VR6 lump, this has stuffed into the front of a MK1 Golf.

V8? The old rover lump is still hard to beat for size.

Duratec V6 & MTX75 gearbox?

DIY Si - 19/3/07 at 05:17 PM

Might depend where you want to put it. RV8 isn't actually that big, but in the boot it will be, due to a transaxle. In the front, plenty(ish) of space. If you have room for a transaxle, the audi V6's aren't that big and fairly powerful, esp. the twin turbo version!

the daimler v8 is prob the smallest but its old and fairly hard to get parts for.
the ford 5.0 is smallish (less than a rover) and as standard produces 200hp from a mid eighties engine not that heavy if fitted with alloy heads & inlet. parts are cheap from the states

Lexus/Soarer can be had for not a lot of dosh, there was one on ebay a couple of weeks ago for about £600 Buy it now.
Ford 302 is about the smallest, although, as said not exactly light unless you throw some dosh at it.
Guess the good old RV8 will be the cheapest.
If i wanted a V6 i'd look at the alfa. Gorgeous looks and sound, and fairly cheap
If your brave/mad like me, go out on a limb, and look for something different (see left) very light, compact, 7500 rpm redline, 400hp as standard and dry sumped into the bargain Bit of a challenge to get running and mate to a gearbox tho.

Al.

what about the engine form the Rover 827? - think it is same as honda v6 - is that small?

ned - 20/3/07 at 09:51 AM

audi v8's are generally very short as they hang over the front axle, not sure on the width or other dims though.

Ned.

ps what about the small mitsibushi v6 (2ltr?) out of an fto? there was also a 1.8 or 2ltr v6 fitted in mazda mx3's iirc?

NS Dev - 20/3/07 at 11:51 AM

what other criteria?

Most compact "car" v6 around is the Opel-Cosworth KF V6, 450hp at under 90kg all-up weight and tiny.

Really small would be a 2 stroke v6 outboard boat engine, just as a daft answer, but the little v6 Yamaha outboards make huge power from very small cc!

andyps - 20/3/07 at 01:26 PM

What about the engine from the Mazda MX3? No idea how big it was but should be pretty compact for a V6 as it was only 2 litre.

NS Dev - 20/3/07 at 05:15 PM

pretty much same as ford/jag baby v6

locost_bryan - 23/3/07 at 04:18 AM

Mazda MX3 V6 totally unrelated to Ford/Jag V6.

K8, 1800cc, 130 or 140bhp, MX3
KF, 2000cc, 140 or 160bhp, Eunos 500
KL, 2500cc, 165 or 200bhp, MX6/626/Telstar/Probe

620l x 675w x 640h
176kg

Suzuki V6 based on it.

Hi, info on Audi V8 as found on net (don't know whether it is 3.6l or 4.2l engine, I do believe that they share the same block though...)

1. 20-1/2" = 521mm
2. 29" = 736mm
3. 19" = 483mm
4. 11-3/4" = 298mm

21" = 533mm

1:the length " from the pullies to the transmission matting surface".
2:width top
3:width bottom
4:from the front to the engine mounts.

Weight 440 lbs (est 400) (198kg)

the 60 degree renault v6 used in the laguna/clio etc are pretty compact .

the good ole PRV(in later form) aint too bad either and comes with a RWD gearbox .
