crossflow water pump take off piece
02GF74 - 11/12/07 at 04:02 PM

the inlet pipe of the Ford crossflow water pump has a tapped hole into a which one of at least two different pieces can be fitted, the pieces are a hose end fitting.

anyone know the size/thread of the fitting and where you can buy the fittings?

a bit like this, but bigger and in aluminium alloy.

Burton used to list them but they appear to have ruined their site so it's harder to find stuff now. However, your local motor factor should be able to supply this part. It's the same part that screws into the inlet manifold IIRC.

I grabbed a couple at one of the kit car shows for about 50p each as my water pump was missing it, and the one in the inlet manifold had corroded away to almost nothing.

It helps to have a paper Burtons catalogue!

There are 3 to choose from:

FP477 - straight
FP478 - 90-degree elbow
FP479 - 135-degree elbow

You can do a search on the Burtons website using any of those codes.

HTH,
David

£7.80 for the standard straight union?

That is outrageous.

cheers ..... 3/8 npt he he he .... so hopefully this is not some obscure size that the local hose place don't stock - who know, maybe they do them in brass for less brass, as it were.

Its the same size (or very very close) to brass plumbing fittings you can get in B&q etc, and that is exactly what I used,
also the Alui connectors, both on the inlet manifold and water pump are made of a weird alui, that corrodes like buggery
and then snaps, the brass ones, I never had an issue with on my crossflows

Wow really Steve, I've been told by a CNC specialist that i know, to not use a brass fitting into the ally water pump as it probably won't last 6 months before issues ?

How long did the brass one last in yours ?

21 years, so not to long

The Local plumbers merchants will do them in brass. Had loads for the Locost race engines.

Damit,

I wish I checked back onto this site regularly, I ordered new parts from Burtons, to make sure i got the right part instead of buying brass bits on line without fully knowing if I was getting the right sized bits for my car.

But hey ho, am glad this site has great people on it offering what others need at great prices to keep the costs down.

Thanks again.

Jason
