If you're keeping it as a Saab Froggy I've got an Aero 'Cobra' intake pipe in the garage that I never got round to fitting - that ones still got the lpt one on as I recall - the Aero ones flow quite a lot better/more.....and as it has an Aero Turbo....! - £35 posted to Stoke if you're interested?

Sorry for the hijack Steve

Can't go too mad with it as its now the wife's second car as she runs a pov spec diesel polo during the week . The t7 management seems quite straight forward so just going to fatten up the midrange as its very smooth at the moment . I wouldn't want to push the tdo4 past 1.2 bar and it's not even hitting 0.9 yet with the current map.

I'm useless at driving fwd cars but with the map sorted to give the big wodge of torque if will be a nice tub to waft round in. Build quality seems pretty good as everything works inside including the split climate system once I gassed it up .

Plenty of enthusiast owned 9-5s around for a grand .

True, had to mention it though

I was going to suggest the same, if it wasn't for the seating problem!

What about a locost? £250 to build, that leaves £1250 to spend on a crazy engine for it.

You can have my Fiat Coupe for well under your budget 0-60 in 6.2 seconds, 0-100 in 14.5 seconds. Significantly quicker than a Leon Cupra R above 60 mph.

I've done ~50k miles in it with no problems (though plenty of preventative maintenance) and I get between 27 and 33mpg depending on how far into licence losing territory you want to go.

This is highly ironic coming from me, but I recommend a Subaru, at least if you lived around here. There are thousands of them in my neck of the woods. Head gaskets go apparently. 4wd. I ice raced one this year a bit. Handled amazingly, much like a less fancy Audi. Really.

The thing with those cheaper Skoda's like the VRS's.
They are all actually DEARER than the equivelant VAG cars now like Golf GTI's/A3's/Cupra's etc...

Must be that everyone on ebay has the same idea...
Well, that and the fact that the A3 and Golf is much more common...

What are people's thoughts re. a Renault Clio 172/182???
I'm surprised by them not being mentioned, am I completely off the mark with this one?
I don't know anything about them apart from two fella's from here (who can drive) had one (each) as track cars and loved them...

I was just thiniking that they are a bit more modern (for the money in question) but that they can still go round corners? Or so I thought?

Granted they won't be fast, but they won't be dog slow, or are they?

People#s opinions are really, really welcome on this one, as I've been ebay searching and it appears that they are in the price range... So what's wrong with them? (apart from being French, obviously)

Cheers again...
Steve

I had a 182 briefly, they are a quick little car, well specced with cruise, climate etc. They do have some issues, timing belts are a pig to do (and expensive) so make sure its had one done. Exhausts and mounts are pretty poor and again quite pricey. All in a pretty good sporty hatch and they do go round corners very very well, even on 3 wheels.

For some reason though I just didn't get along with it, it was tinny, interior pretty low rent, kept it for 3 months then flogged it on. I've come to the conclusion me and french cars just don't get on.

As a side note, if you can up the budget to 2k you'd get a lot more choice and cars in better condition so maybe saving a few £££ in the medium term too?

That's a never ending spiral of frustration though... A question, or rather, a statement that has been a matter of contention between a friend and I for years.
We always ended up stating categorically that we would stick to £13k and that would get a half decent 911..........

To be honest, this thread was 50% hypo-pa-thetical
Don't know what it is that's drawing me to the little Clio. I hate the fact that I fancy one as I swore I'd never have a little french car!

How about a Civic Type R?

And just started me thinkin as to which car I could with a genuinely minuscule budget that would be entertaining to drive fast.

It would have to be a compromise I'm afraid... (doesn't everything nowadays!)...

[Edited on 19/4/12 by Steve Hignett]

Given that it was the sound as much as the speed and nothing in your budget is going to compete with the speed...

How about an Alfa 156 V6, 24valve. They come in 2.5lt (190bhp) up to 3.2 (250 I think). My sportwagon came with leather, 5 seats, big enough to get all the kit in for the bike races, all the other usual stuff. It was quick and... had a sound track to die for! Of course there's the reliability concerns but mine never had a thing go wrong for 3 years, then I got rid, before I pushed my luck too much. ...and you might end up with almost a £1000 left over.
