M5 Motorway

Ive got to head to devon friday from sunny Essex

Cant make my mind up which way to go.

M25 + M3 + A30 etc down to devon

or

M25 + M4 + M5 down to devon

Just wondered what the M5 is like down that way, i know the A30 is a bit hit & miss at times near stonehenge

M4 has roadworks not far from the M25, i think that was the bit with narrow lanes and 50 average speedcameras from this weekends trip

I live within a similar distance of the M4 and M3 and if we head down to Exeter we use the M4/M5 now as we've been stuck in traffic far too many times on the A303 (especially around Stonehenge).

Plus, it's far easier to just get on the M4/M5 and set the cruise control rather than the continual stop start of dual carriageways, roundabouts, traffic, towns, etc.. However, the scenery is better on the A303 so it depends on what you prefer.

The A303 is a far more interesting road, but you can easily get stuck behind caravans or slow HGVs on the single lane sections. It would be my preferred choice for a very early morning or late evening trip, but the M5 will probably be quicker during the day.

That said, we had to get back from Keevil airfield to Plymouth on Saturday, and decided to do the M4/M5 on the way back as we had a transit that kept going into limp home mode up hills and it took us over 4 1/2 hours to get back! Mainly due to idiots driving into the back of other cars combined with thousands of even bigger idiots slowing down to gawp at them

Went M25 M3 A303 at a week ago very slow.. I think I would take the M4, bit of a mixed bag depends on when your traveling.. Remember it's caravan season..

I've done this trip many times, and having experimented with other routes, I now stick to the M4-M5

I've got a little list-- I've got a little list
Of society offenders who might well be underground,
And who never would be missed-- who never would be missed!

Went through there a few weeks ago on a Friday, no problems apart from being limited to 50

M4/M5 can get slow around Bristol near to the rush hours but I drove straight past Bristol via the M4/M5 interchange last week on my way to Devon with no hold ups at all right around 9:00am. So the holidays may be helping for a change.
