AAAARGH! Zetec flywheels!

So this morning I got everything ready to put the engine in - re organised the garage, picked up the engine crane got everything ready to go............. but my flywheel doesn't fit!

It's an ST170 engine and the flywheel is supposedly off a silver top 1.6 zetec engine. The bolt holes on the flywheel are however closer together than those on the end of the crank .

So I'm back to square one again! Is this flywheel off something else or have I used the wrong info and bought the wrong flywheel?

Any advice that anyone could offer would be great, or indeed if someone has an appropriate flywheel.....!?

Teach you to suck eggs but the flywheel holes are not semetrical so will only go on in one position.

The holes are slightly offset to ensure the timing of the reluctor ring on the back is in the right place. IE, the flywheel only fits in one position.

Have you tried turning it to get them all lined up?

i bought a 1.6 zetec flywheel not long ago, and it doesn't match my 2.0. can only think its a flywheel from the sigma engine. mine has square trigger wheel cut outs where as the 2.0 had round.

I know nothing about Zetec's so this might be not be helpful but are the bolt holes all equally spaced, quite common for flywheel bolts to be oddly spaced so that it will only line up in one position. I think it's to do with the crank sensor reading the flywheel so the crank and flywheel need to be in the correct alignment.

Might line up if you rotate and try all the combinations of bolt holes.

if its the same as mine, the holes are actually closer together, i.e the diameter of the ring they make is smaller.

this was my 2l

and the one that doesn't fit.

I reckon you're on the lookout for a 1.8 zetec these days, reckon the 1.6 flywheels from the escort must be rare.

Yep it's the diameter the holes would make if you drew a line through them all that's smaller not the location of the holes.

It must be off a sigma or something then - the clutch fits perfectly though

As you say it mustbe a zetec s ie the sigma as the 1.6 silvertop fly is the same as the 1.8 on the silver and black top except where fitted to the mtx75, they had the the 240mm fly' same as the 2.0.

Zetec S is not a zetec. Just like the ST170 is not a zetec, its a duratec ?? oh hang on isnt the Focus RS mk1 a durtec or was that a zetec.

One of them Ford things. They call it the same or different for each car, nuts aint it.

For the ST170 either the 1.8 Zetec or the 2.0 zetec will go on.
The 1.6 cvh will go on if the bolt holes are drilled out, also the sierra 1.8 cvh one is the same. These dont have the flywheel sensor triggers on though.

ST170 is a zetec engine but badged up as a duratec - some Ford marketing nonsense!

I've bought a 2.0 zetec flywheel (I hope!) - I got the guy to measure it all up before I bought it and sure enough the diameter the bolts holes would make is ~5mm larger than the fly I have.

I'll stick some pictures up when it arrives to try and stop other people falling into the same trap!

Yep i know about the model types, just trying some humor. Ford try hard at confusing stuff.

If you have a 2.0 zetec flywheel coming then it should be the big type with recessed clutch plate. It will be a heavy thing. Got one for mine. Its possible to have the clutch face side machined flat to fit a pinto or cosworth 4x4 clutch and drilled to suit. A lot of work but does allow for a stronger clutch to be fitted.
