Dodgy email.. Advise?

Received this the other day despite not doing anything...

Thank you for applying to pay for your TV Licence by Monthly Direct Debit. This email is to confirm that the application has been successful and that you are licensed.

The TV Licence number is 3525060507.

Within 3 working days you will receive a further email from us with the information you will need to access your payment plan and TV Licence online.

If you receive any letters asking you to buy a TV Licence in the next few days, please ignore them.

This was recieved from confirmation@tvlicensing.co.uk and the source seems OK.. any thoughts? I've checked me bank account and thats not showing a DD. Is there any way to check that licence number,? Its different to ours and we are in the middle of the licence we have. And, its wor lass who deals with it over the counter in the post office....

In the bin, if such a DD appears on your statement (which I very much doubt) one phone call will stop it

Has it got any details in it that refer to you specifically other than your email address? That's always a good indicator of spam or phishing mails.

Does it contain your name or is it just generic? Could you have set up a DD last year and forgotten about it?

We paid for our TV licence online by debit card and got an email like this (genuine):

"Subject: TV Licence application for MRS DA HUMBUG [not really HUMBUG (lol ]

Thank you for buying your TV Licence. This email is to confirm your payment of GBP145.50 has been processed and that you are licensed.

The TV Licence number is XXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

Within 3 working days you will receive a further email from us with the information you will need to access your TV Licence online.

If you receive any letters asking you to buy a TV Licence in the next few days, please ignore them.

IMO i doubt the wording would be "Ignore them" in an official communication, rather "your payment and these may have crossed in the post" or words to that effect.

I would keep an eye on your DD's online, and bin the email.

Kindest Regards,
Richard.

I had the same email and have long paid by DD. I logged on and downloaded my new license without issue and the DD arrangement continues to work correctly. Take a look at the website to check it out....

However you state that SWMBO does the license manually at the PO, which does seem odd!

I pay mine by direct debit which was setup online, the email address which returned the confirmation was: TV Licensing (donotreply@tvlicensing.co.uk). So the domain appears to be correct but the sender is different, don't know wheteher that is significant or not.

Here is a LINK to the page for checking your licence.

Davie

Just had search through old emails and my confirmation from 2009 is identical:

From: confirmation@tvlicensing.co.uk
"Thank you for applying to pay for your TV Licence by Annual Direct Debit. This email is to confirm that the application has been successful and that you are licensed.

The TV Licence number is xxxxxxxxxxx.

Within 3 working days you will receive a further email from us with the information you will need to access your payment plan and TV Licence online.

If you receive any letters asking you to buy a TV Licence in the next few days, please ignore them.

TV Licensing"

Cheers
Davie

All seems ok with return paths etc and Tvlicensing is a legit domain owned by the bbc,I'm gonna guess its the email that you'll get in a few days that will have the dodgy link in it
