Camber Question

Can I set my camber by simply taking measurements?

Flat on the ground : all equal and squared up..

Measure bottom of inner wheel rim to rim.
Measure top of inner wheel rim to rim.

Now adjust the top measurement a mill or two smaler to give neg castor..

Yes you can. If it is level on level ground, check and adjust the camber against a vertical level. It's how I did mine.

You really need to be measuring from vertical, not between tyres on each side.
Measuring/finding an accyurate vertical is tthe key, as above make sure you on level ground and use a spirit level.

yes, you need to measure each wheel against vertical. If you just measure between the wheels you could have one slightly positive camber and one a lot negative and it'd just measure as negative.
To eliminate any slope on the ground, measure each wheel then turn it around and measure on the same spot but facing the other way. Take an average of the two sets of readings readings.

Stupid question time again ...
When they say 1 degree - do you take a protractor from the hub and follow the line?
If so - centre is a dot - going outwards 1 degree at my rim is like 2mm?

so take 4mm out of the top measurement - presto 1 degree of camber ...

cheers

I assume you are getting ready for IVA and want to ensure you have some self centering, in which case, yes, just get a roungh amoungt of nominal neg camber, then when you are roadworthy, get it down to a decent tyre place with laser allignment and get it all check out and set up.

Across 15" (381 mm) 1 deg is 6.65 mm

Across 13" (330 mm) 1 deg is 5.76 mm

If you want about 1 deg tape a 6 mm thickness spacer to your spirit level and adjust till it shows dead vertical, when held against the wheel with the spacer against the upper part of the rim.

Cheers

You can do it quickly. You can do it cheap. You can do it right. – Pick any two.
