Another 'What car should I buy?' question

A mate of mine wants a new car, here's what he's looking for:

Budget, up to £7k

Commutes about 25 miles a day, so not a huge amount of mileage to do.

Wants something that's fun and engaging to drive, though probably not a balls out hot hatch like a Civic Type R, can be petrol or diesel, but doesn't want to go less than about 30mpg combined, and something that wont cost the earth if it goes wrong.

One though I had was the Focus ST, any others?

Modern classic?

Alpina B3

My thinking is that it avoids some M3 running costs.

Another vote for the Leon, but I am slightly biased!

i didnt think the type r was particularly balls out under normal conditions. The ride is pretty decent and would be very easy to live with daily.

but you'd always have that ability under the hood.

how about a s2000? lovely looking things and i thought a bit classier looking than a type r and the usual hot hatch suspects.

You will not see more than 25-28mpg from a focus st on a short commute. Much less if you get a shift on.

Needs something a bit more practical than an S2000 or MX5 as he's got dogs, Leon is a possible I would think, Alpina is a nice thought though a hatchback would be better I think.

mk5 golf gti may come in under budget.

Megane 225 cup, may be a squeeze to get 30mpg tho.

Mk5 golf gt tdi 170 or leon tdi fr 170 would get my vote, practical, quick, well made and will get between 40-50mpg too, tax won't be as high as petrol equivalent. Reliable 200bhp from a remap too
