Flywheel lightening in the East Midlands/south yorks area?

Hi all,

Although this isn't for a Locost, I though this would be the best place to ask.

Can anyone reccomend a company that can lighten and balance my Merc's flywheel for me?

Preferably in the East Midlands, or south Yorks area, but I will go a little further if nessasary(B'ham, Manc, etc...), but not too far.

It is just the flywheel on its own, not the flywheel and crank.

Cheers Frank

I would never have a flywheel lightened, if its not done correctly they can explode, people have lost feet and worse.

With regards to balancing the whole rotating assembly should be done as a unit i.e. crank, front pulley, flywheel, clutch.

My steel flywheel cost about £100 more than getting the standard cast one lightened, I value my feet, legs and life far more than that.

Buy a steel flywheel and get the whole lot balanced.

Thanks for the advice, but you can't get a steel flywheel for a Mercedes M110 engine, nobody makes 1, seeing as about 85% were automatics when they left the factory there's no market for them.

There isn't many of us tuning these engines, even people who race them have to have the standard flywheel machined.

I understand that I should balance the whole rotating assembly, but I'm not taking the engine apart just to balance the flywheel, Mercedes were very good at balancing these engines from the factory, and I from what others have done, balancing the flywheel alone is fine.

I just need somebody to do it that's all.

Or, do you know a company that will custom make me a steel flywheel, and roughly how much they'll charge?

Give Cotterel's a ring see if they would recommend doing it. Not far from you in Clay Cross here

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.
