Cheap alternatives to a pinto and type 9?

After my build had stalled for more than a few years I'm looking at restarting.
However, the 2l pinto engine and gearbox I have out and standing in the drive under a tarp, is looking more than a little sad.

When I embarked on this, over 12 years ago the pinto was probably the most popular choice as it came with the donor. But it was BIG.. and HEAVY.. needed bits cutting to fit and had moderate power. But engine technology has changed a lot since I started so I was wondering what are my alternatives as I'm sure there are much "better" options now that would be available for under £500. With "better" I'm thinking, weight, size\fit, ease of installation as well as power output.

I'm also expecting to have to rebuild the old pinto, so a newer engine\GB will save that hassle too
So, what can you suggest?

Cheers

Danny

For ease, pinto and type 9...

How far is your build along? Other 'standard' options are zetec, duratec, 4age...

~Hmmm yes but when you say "pinto & type 9" you mean a working pinto and type 9 and not one that has been left outside with a tarp over it (most of the time) for 11-12 years.

The thing that prompted this is me facing stripping the whole thing down and spending money on it when perhaps the money would be better spent on a zetec etc.
Are the options you mention less tall? so the sump won't need hacking and the oil filler hole won't need removing?

cheers

I suggest a zetec, nice smooth motor, a move up from the pinto. Bolts up to a type 9 just like a pinto.

If the pinto needs a rebuild then a zetec with your t9 is probably the best bet

Yep agree with above MX5.

I sourced a good engine from a MK1 with 75K on it complete with ECU and wiring loom for £150 and gearbox for £75. Done 4K hard driving on it and no issues at all.
A great engine to upgrade in the future via turbo/ supercharging without changing the internals (engine was designed for charging). The gearbox is a bit larger than the type 9 but one of the smoothest gear changes I have come across...

Plenty of options for not much £££'s

your type 9 box is still the box of choice
mainly because its got a removable bellhousing and lots of upgrades are available

without changing the bellhousing you can get fit any of the older ford engines - x-flow, pinto, CVH and 'zetec E' (thats the 1.8 / 2.0 ones)
the 'zetec SE' (the 1.25 to 1.7 ones) will fit, but I think an aftermarket bellhousing is need to make it easy..

with an aftermarket bellhousing you can fit the duratec HE (2.0 and 2.3, as found in mondeo's and the latest caterhams), along with the VAG 1.8, vauxhall XE and toyota 4age

OK, so it is looking like zetec.. what is all this "black top" & "silver top" stuff?
Would a 1.8 be OK or should I aim for a 2l?

Thanks for your help chaps

they are both 'zetec E' engines

silver top is the old one from an escort / early mondeo
black top is the newer one from a focus etc..

the silvertop has hydraulic cam followers and an alloy cam cover
the blacktop has solid cam followers and a black plastic cam cover along with a few other upgrades and tweaks

the 1.8 blacktop from a focus is a nice engine revvy engine with lots of life and a fair bit cheaper than the 2.0 ones
and with the cams out of the 2.0 its even got the more or less the same power as a 2.0 (a bit less torque though)
you can even buy a 1.8 focus engine brand new in a crate for ~£550

Put it this way I swaped a 2000 1.8 Mondeo this morning for a go kart for my lad. And the kart is dead.

The mondeo had 8 months test but was a shed, the best part being the engine. Well serviced and low miles I could run that in a kit car with no fancy extras for next to bugger all. Re use the fuel injection system and the exhaust and you will have a power out put, a bit over 100hp. And with emisions to iva/mot standard.

Car value £125,
Remove engine and bits. Tyres had 6mm on rims and would fetch £15 each on ebay. See what elts will sell on eaby.

By the time you have weighed the shell in the engine is free. It gets expensive if you want max horse power. Its the extras that cost the money.

One thing to note is most 16 valve engines will be taller than your pinto and will need the sump chopping. Easy job on a zetec if you can weld steel.

This hasnt cost me much more than your budget and will go 160~170 bhp http://youtu.be/Mvo3lazzSVo

Its all about how much you want to spend and how much power your brain is telling you you MUST have against how much work you can do your self with out paing others.

ie sump chop cost would be just the welding gas / filler if you do your own or £150 if you pay some one and upto £450 for a fancy ali sump.

Agree with the mx5, older cars seem to be rust buckets an worth peanuts yet the engines are very robust.

If you want to use the mondeo/escort zetec engine with original ecu, make sure it comes from a model without PATS (ie anti-theft) otherwise it will becoming very difficult to get going.
